It's amazing to me how so many wonderful recipies come from people who are struggling to feed themselves with only a few cheap ingredients to use. They are some of the most comforting foods in the world, with many people making them even when they are no longer struggling. I bet that is how french toast was born as a way to use day-old stale bread. I will have to try this one, too.
