Tips for choosing the right birth control

When it comes to birth control, there are many different options available. Choosing the right one depends on several different factors and where a woman is at in her life.

Convenience often plays a big role when making a decision about birth control. While some women are more comfortable with oral contraceptive pills, others don’t want the responsibility of taking a pill every day.

One option I recommend to my patients is the Mirena Intra-Uterine Device, or IUD. The Mirena IUD is inserted into a woman’s uterus and protects against pregnancy for 5 years by releasing a hormone called progestin. There is also a copper IUD on the market that protects against pregnancy for 10 years and is suitable for women who don’t believe in putting hormones in their body.

Some birth control options, including the Mirena IUD, can take periods completely away. Although there are no adverse side effects to stopping periods, some patients love that and others don’t. I’ve noticed that, especially in younger patients, taking the cycle away can make them uncomfortable because it is reassuring to them that they are not pregnant.

The best way to figure out which birth control option is right for you is to sit down with your provider and talk about all the different choices. Some options are more appropriate than others based on your age, individual circumstances and health profile. Together, you can figure out what makes the most sense for you.
