“L is for narcissist” was the funniest line ever uttered on LTT. Unleash the Dan!

I suspect the AG1 $100 monthly subscription breaks down as follows: $5 for the ingredients and $95 to cover the marketing budget.

I saw the ad and it is false advertising. No way the new Ipad would survive a hydraulic press of that size without even a scratch.

To be fair Linus didn’t watch the ad - he just read the comments

Luke: *says any headline*
Linus: "You picked THAT?!"

About The Ad: I do not think anyone failed to get the message. I think artists have had a particularly furious reaction because it just very succinctly depicts the Silicon Valley techbro view of artists being substituted by tech-that-makes-art (see generative AI).
That's their selling point: this thin slab of metal and rare earths can do what dozens of creative tools used to be able to do.

We get what they were trying to say. That's not the issue: the metaphor they used to express that meaning is extremely tone-deaf.
They failed to read the room and said the quiet part out loud.

I heard that crushing/wasting perfectly functioning/serviceable tools to promote buying flashy new ones is pretty much on brand for Apple

The Apple ipad ad would have gone over better if it weren't so realistic. If it were stylized 3d animation, and the visual was more compression than destruction, with unrealistic visuals, we wouldn't be having this discussion. It's the time spent seeing these things realistically crushed that offends people. The same idea can be fun or distressing depending how it is expressed.

I think the most important thing about the Ipad ad, as it is a commercial, is how it makes the viewer feel and the goal of that feeling should be positive. I'm fine with the replacing of the tools, I think it's the destructive nature of the press that makes people uncomfortable or even outright depressed or sad.

I feel like Linus is justifying the ad because he didnt have a reaction to it. I also didnt have a negative reaction to it, but the cultural connotations of an ad that offend an audience are a statement of that brands values.

Imagine if Pepsi had never issued a retraction after the Kardashian ad. Yes, thats a more extreme example, but since Linus was arguing less extreme examples its only fair to turn that around

The idea that Apple has come full circle from the 1984 ad to an ad that feels like a big industrial brother crushing the soul inside art is legitimate. The fact that Apple was corporate enough to issue an apology and leave the ad up is an unitended expression of their corporate soul-lessness.

I feel like Linus sees the world through a particular lens. Not a bad one, I just think it would be worth understanding for him.

To me, the intended message of the Apple ad wasn't obvious. I thought it meant to say in their typical hubris that you don't need all this stuff when you can have an iPad. Seeing all the destruction just doesn't feel good.

I believe the opposite is more effective and less controversial, an ad where you would see an iPad create things or transform into them

The problem with steamOs is that version 1 was an internal one, version2 got released on the steam deck, and Valve don't know how to count to 3

Funny how apple forgot to add calculator to that mix under press) 10:00

The Apple ad would have landed a lot differently if we weren't in the peak of AI replacing artists. Whether you agree with the anger or not, I think this is still a miss step on Apple's part to not even consider this reaction was possible.

1:19:00 "It's an L for nnnarcissist" is Dan's finest moment on camera. I've laughed at it so many times.
Edit: corrected Dan's quote ;-)

I was a little off-put by the ad. I understood what they were going for when I first saw it, and didn't think they intended to portray that the iPad REPLACES all these things. But the destruction of all of those beautiful human tools made me feel a certain way. I wasn't mad, just a bit, like.. Damn.
