Wondering how to find a mentor? If so, you probably already know that spamming someone's direct messages or sending fruit baskets to their home isn’t the best way to get mentorship. Smart entrepreneurs, investors, and BiggerPockets viewers know that finding a mentor isn’t done by chance, but by design.

Last week we talked to Tomás Cardenas from Team Kekoa, where he mentioned his mentor, boss, friend, and investing partner Kekoa Lwin. Today, you’ll learn exactly how Tomás used a three-step approach to earn Kekoa’s trust and make his way onto his team. These steps aren’t groundbreaking, and they’re simple enough for anyone to use in any industry, not just real estate!

Kekoa even stops by to give his own personal advice on how to approach a mentor and how mentors can truly give back to a mentee. If you’re looking for a mentor, comment below what type of mentor you’re looking for and what value you can add. You may just find your dream mentor in the comments!

Tip that has changed my life.

Always try to bring up in conversations with new people you meet about your profession or goals. I met my now mentor and told him I was in corporate fitness and personal training. Later that month he approached me about training him (bringing him value) and we have been very close ever since. He has single handedly been the reason why REI is my passion. If I wasn't open about my profession and what I could bring to the table who knows what would have happened! You never know that next person that may have a lasting impact in the direction of your life.

These tips ARE great for young people, like Terrence said. How would these tips look for someone later in life, but still just as new to the REI world? Is there a podcast on "Finding a mentor in your 40's"? With that said, I am looking to invest in small multifamily units and transition to larger properties. I enjoy analyzing deals, have experience in administrative support roles, use a systematic and organized approach while being completely flexible and teachable, especially when it comes to achieving my goals. I am a helpful and resourceful person who does what it takes to get the job done!

Like others have said, GREAT tips for young people looking for a mentor, but my husband and I are looking for a mentor to help us get started in REI and possibly even partner with on deals. We are in our early 50s and have found it more difficult to network for a variety of reasons, but in all honestly, it seems younger people have a much easier time with this. Anyone have advice for this stage of our lives getting started? Thanks!
