How to find a mentor - the RIGHT way

This is my recommendation about how to find a mentor - the right way. This is the way that will give you the highest chance of actually finding a mentor. Snap/Insta: GPStephan

Because click bait sucks, here’s what NOT to do:

1. Don’t just ask “Will you be my mentor” or “Will you mentor me?”
2. Don’t approach it having done no research about what you want to do
3. Don’t ask vague questions

What you SHOULD do:

1. Already be doing and learning what you want to do and achieve - ON YOUR OWN
2. Do NOT let NOT having a mentor stop you from doing this
3. Be specific and have a basic background about what you want to do
4. Be open to ask for help, but if this is something you can learn from a 10 second google search…that’s bad
5. OPINIONS and EXPERIENCE are a mentor’s strong point, not necessarily factual knowledge
6. Offer something in return - doesn’t need to be monetary. Your time, your enthusiasm, your help..whatever you can give.

I’ve never asked anybody I consider a mentor, “Will you mentor me?” It’s something that happened naturally over time. Asking “Will you mentor me? is a yes or no question and IF it’s a yes, it’s a HUGE obligation for that person. Very doubtful they’ll just say “yes” right off the bat.

I’ve never approached anyone specifically - even with my mentors in real estate, it all happened organically. I hope the same comes to all of you watching.

There are also a multitude of forums, websites, and videos for you to learn from on your own. Chances are if you’re interested in something, so are a million other people - use the internet to reach out and learn from as many people as you can and do what you want to do - mentor or no mentor.

A mentor can be a great source of encouragement, knowledge, and wisdom. However, do what you want, regardless if you have someone coaching you or not, and eventually the right people tend to come along once they see how dedicated you are to whatever you do. Thank you for watching!

Finally someone who don't just keep talking and waste our time for 30 minutes to say something that just takes a few minutes!

Intelligent beyond his time, not scammy and pushy like many others. Great production quality and content. Graham if you have trolls, please don't let that get you down. This is helping a ton of people and you're changing people's lives even though you can't communicate one on one with all of us. Thank you for spending your time and energy on this.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Do what you want to do
And eventually a mentor will come to you

Hey Graham, thank you so much for making this video. So many gurus keep talking about how being mentored is the key or the secret but I always felt awkward asking someone to be my mentor when I don't even know them. I always felt it was something that happened naturally. I want my mentorship to happen organically, not forced.

Mentoring doesn't necessarily mean that the person has to be front of you. I can watch all of Grahams videos on Youtube and still feel like he is mentoring me already. Truly motivational!

Completely agree. Taking action yourself and not waiting for someone to guide you down the perfect path is so important. Also I think it's important to be very open to influences from everyone as well as being willing to learn from everyone. I've found just asking (a successful person) their backstory is a great opening to a potential mentor relationship. Also if you do find a mentor-like relationship developing - you need to continue developing on your own as well - and show them that you're following through on the lessons you're learning. People want to help others who are actively trying to improve/better themselves. No one wants to mentor an individuals who isn't going to take action.

If you're lucky enough to find a good humble mentor then that's great because it can happen, an actual legitimate mentor will never ask you for money like some of these seminar Real estate Guru's who ask for hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Real mentors will just ask for your time and dedication in return for the knowledge and experience. Unfortunately most so called mentors get cocky, their heads blow up and they feel like you owe them something at all times.

What mentors need to do is loan the money up front so that the student can get started. The student will obviously pay the mentor back after their first deal, this gives the student confidence and leverage so that the mentor actually helps u with finding leads and closing on a deal, its a win win situation.

This advice is solid and I totally agree with it, Just recently as a window cleaner in the UK, we have been building up our reviews on Google for the work that we have done and it has finally paid off, a property agent just like Graham (who is from London) had recently moved up to my part of the country, the North East of England and he was looking for the best of service and found us via our reviews.

We had a meeting with him and described in detail what we could offer him, and then we proved ourselves through the actual work we undertook with him. This guy was really impressed with what he saw and our professionalism and noticed that we were different and exactly what he was looking for.

Now this isn't really a short story about a mentor, but more of, through hard work presents opportunity with people who have already succeeded and you can get into the areas that you want through their contacts. This property agent actually got us our first £1m house to clean, which was his own, and again was so impressed, he them put us forward as the "go to guys" for all their cleaning cleaning needs for their property company.

Word has since spread and we are now cleaning factories and many other mansions as a result of meeting this guy, none of which would have been possible without always trying to excel ourselves and be determind to be the best!

I think of this person as a mentor for the reasons that they are showing us how to get into where the big money is, because they have already themselves been down that path and succeeded, now they are taking us down that path too!

Great video as always Graham! Solid advice!

Hey Graham, you should make a video on how getting you real estate license has helped you with real estate investing. That's what I am currently debating on.

I would recommend anyone whos in sales, let alone real estate read Dale Carnegie win friends and influence others. I can't tell you how powerful it is to be able to understand the principles that make people like you. I got so many promotions after reading that book, to be likable and friendly to everyone you meet on command. If your friends with the boss you get a raise, if you make everyone around you feel good about themselves they make you feel good about you and give you opportunities you otherwise wouldn't have had.

The closer I get to ultimately receiving my real estate broker's license (in Illinois we aren't agents, we're all brokers) I'm becoming more and more confident with my laws, facts, and opinions alike. I love how much more I'm learning every day and your videos really motivate me. Do I need the motivation? No. I want this more than I want to breath but I love how motivating you are man, you're fucking killing it! Much respect, bro.

My favorite video of yours so far, I'm glad I found this one. I've heard people talk about mentors but I've never understood how those relationships start.

This makes a lot of sense. People open to mentoring don’t gravitate to lazy thinkers.
