The Color Kindle | Amazon Colorsoft Review

The Kindle Colorsoft is Amazon's first colour e-reader. It has the best hardware specs of any Kindle ever. This comprehensive review looks at Colorsoft and what it does excellently, such as comics, magazines, and manga. Shopping for e-books and audiobooks is also great since you can view cover art.

I'm one of those who likes seeing book covers and art in colors, and i find the E-ink technology pretty interesting, so starting to see these devices in color is nice to me. Hopefully they sort out the yellow band issue in the near future so that i can buy one.

With all the bad reviews and amazons lack of honest response to the issues I just went with the iPad mini instead. I really wanted the color soft but its just not there yet and I’ll hold off on gen 2

Interesting, but I miss some information...
* is it necessary to crank up the backlight to see colors clearly?
* how long does the battery last? What of one cranks up the backlight?
* ok -- so it can show PDF files? But how do you get PDF-files "into the Kindle"?
* can it show Kindle books containing math/figures/tables? This has not worked in the past for e-ink readers, only for the google version (+ probably iOS)
* comics... I'm more into classic comics, like Tintin, Sprint, Rip Kirby, Blueberry, Ric Hochet, Donald Duck (Carl Barks, etc.), etc. Any of those available for the Kindle?

From someone who has and likes my colorsoft, this review was kinda glazing. I expected a more detailed analysis of how much battery life takes a hit due to higher brightnesses being necessary, thorough differences in contrast with the paper white, dark mode differences etc. The colorsoft has some problems even when you don’t consider the manufacturer defects right now.

7:22 I just got one and packed it back up to return it. I'm one of the unlucky ones that has ghosting pages and a weird yellow band on the bottom of the screen. Also it looks very grainy.

But no color against kobo or pocketbook difference picture?

I hope Amazon will order a lot of color screens from the manufacturers which will finally give a boost to the market.

Confused this device has had all shipments halted due to tech issue with screen and yellow gradient on bottom of units so why are you reviewing it ? Impossible to purchase this faulty device until they worked out a solution to problem

how do you do a review and not even mention the issues that even amazon themselves have officially acknowledged?

Even with the minor issues, I’m obsessed with mine.

Yep, Amazon seem to have a problem with features of the software. Same as the Scribe. Missing features.

Highlighting in dark mode was a game changer for me. I am very happy with my Colorsoft.

That fast page turning system is sweet! In 2012, there’s a concept page flipping system that feels like you’re flipping between pages as if you’re brushing your thumb across the edge of a physical book. This reminds me of that.

Macrumors referenced it, titled: “Multi-Touch Page Flipping eBook Concept Shown on an iPad” January 2012.

i don’t understand why ReMarkable picked Gallery and Amazon picked Kaleido instead of vice versa, given that refresh rate is less relevant in a kindle

These guys are some of the best at doing e-reader reviews, they have great content and always have accurate information. It's amazing how people criticize them and keep saying the same thing about the yellow band and Amazon canceling the product and so on...if you have a problem with Amazon, talk to customer service.

I was shocked that there aren't settings for colour blindness filters or an option to disable colour in books.

Since it requires a full page refresh for any colour on the display, that gets really annoying when it's doing a full refresh just for a chapter marker in a book.

Aside from the current manufacturering issues, would this be a good replacement for my 2021 PW? I read manga on mine and would've had comics on it too if it didn't lack color. I thought this would good device to read both

Would be interesting to see some comparisons to other devices such as the Boox Go Color 7.

I was a little scared before mine arrived because everybody was just throwing hate towards the colorsoft because of the yellow band and the lower text quality but at least for mine and my experience I don't find anything bad with it. I upgraded from a paperwhite 11th gen and this device is way better in every aspect. It has beautiful colors, text is the same, and the warm light is actually much better and oh boy it is fast even when loading images. Best device ever!!! I definitely recommend it!

So, no critics at all? With all the issues it has? 😮
