The amount of post processing your brain does to deliver you live video feeds is pretty incredible. Whatever you are not focusing on is 50% there and 50% your brain filling in the blanks of what you don't see. There's a similar experiment involving you being able to see your hand in your peripheral vision even after removing it from view. Kind of crazy.

I know people are quoting local 58 or the nexpo review and lore breakdown, but I think the actual cause of the effect is that the signals can't cross our corpus callosum fast enough to be properly analysed by both sides of our brain, so it causes them to get distorted.
