this is actually so cool, i swear the water was blue and the leaves are green, the rock was the normal colored (grey and black) and the sand was also normal. but once I look at a different spot they all changed into grey and white again

It's amazing how high definition the color change is and then you realize...

It works because when your eyes are fixated on certain colors for more than 15 seconds the color receptors in your eyes start to tire. Therefore when you look at white after wards you will see the opposite colors then before because the previous color receptors are still tired and trying to regenerate so they think they should still be active. Thus by default the opposite colors come in to play as a temporary substitute.
