New Jersey Jug Handle Turn
Показать описание
NJ does a lot of weird things like not letting you pump your own gas. Another is not letting you make left turns from major streets. You might think that's good. But, in practice it causes even more opportunities for accidents when making left or U-turns (as I'm doing here).
There is another flavor of jug handle that seems safer in which you go _past_ your left turn and then curve around to make a merging right (instead of a left), sort of like a freeway clover leaf. But this isn't good either because you're clogging up the right turn lane to make a left turn, and you have to be careful _not_ to turn right at the "real" right turn, instead waiting for the small ramp just after it. It's confusing and wrong. Even Google Maps gets confused sometimes. I can't imagine what it does to self-driving cars.
To make things worse, sometimes there actually _is_ a protected left turn on the main road, in which case you're screwed if you got in the right lane to prepare for a jug handle (like you may have done on the same road at another intersection). This results in confused people dangerously swerving across lanes at the last minute. Or they're forced to go through intersection and then try to figure out what they have to do to make a U-turn further down the road.
