Im running Debian on all my devices, for my friends and family i install kubuntu, because well... ubuntu, and because i think KDE offers the best user experience for non-power users. I've installed gentoo once, i think it took me over 6 hours (lol). Its a good learning experience, but after a while i didnt have time or interest to continue using it. I would say gentoo is more for a linux hobbyists. In general people should stop thinking distros as trials that determite whether you are a experienced user or a noob, if anything that kind of attitude only makes you look inexperienced.

I was using gentoo for three years, then i moved into a team lead position at work. I ran out of time to do all my optimizations and compiling. I moved to Arch for now, though I wish to go back to gentoo again one day. Life changes and linux distros can adapt to your needs, its great.

I've taken to describing Distros as "Prebuilt computers", where each one comes with its own unique hardware. Despite different components, each one shares the same type of components - motherboards, CPUs, RAM, Video Cards, etc, and you can more or less freely swap between them and get a system that could look like a prebuilt from somewhere else, or a system that's uniquely your own.

One thing people seem to not consider about minimalist distros is that you know every component of the system, because you put it there. If there’s a breakage, you likely know exactly what’s wrong or how to fix it. Whenever I’m using a preconfigured distro and something breaks I have to look up where a certain file is or whatever because it’s not where I would have put it.

The other appeal to arch is they have documentation for almost everything. Despite not using arch (Ubuntu on desktop, asuswrt on a Linux router). I come across arch docs for most of the software I need to configure and it's the cleanest and most concise documentation I've encountered.

Another hidden benefit to compiling your own libraries and binaries is that some exploits will not be effective against your very unique executables. That is assuming you leverage all the awesome build-time variables and also build to your specific CPU capabilities against your own custom-built libraries.

That's the best thing about Linux. Don't like something? You can remove it, or replace it with something else. Can't really do that on windows.
