Howdy YouTubers!
we all are familiar with pine, but it can be a tad tricky to distinguish the difference between white pines and red pines.
although pinyons have distinct features in their wood grain and structure we left them out of the lineup today as their lumber isn't commercially exploited for the wider market.
in the wood working industry we make the distinction between red and white pines based on the color characteristics of the lumber these species produce.

I was curious about one thing: of the commercially available pines in the US (particularly red) do any have notable desirable or undesirable mechanical characteristics for furniture use? I'm mostly thinking about wood movement with temp/humidity, pitch/sap/tar oozing or conflicts with common finishing techniques. I am assuming 'well' dried wood air or kiln that is of a sufficient quality for furniture.

I lived outside Placerville for a number of years, just down the road from from a S.P. mill and I remember they would go far and wide to avoid cutting digger pine which we had everywhere. Smelled great when they were running cedar, like a 5 acre box of pencils. Digger's are fun when they randomly drop branches from 75'+. They've been having a lot of galling issues recently, usually 5-10' from the trunk.

As you probably can guess, there is nothing i can add to as this is all beyond my knowledge, but quite interesting to see all that difference. ... Seems you got permission again to film in the wood shop ...:-)

Large nuts, thick husks... that's my kind of pine! Very informative, just hope there won't be a test next week... ;-) Would also really love to see english and german common names along with the latin ones in the intro. Liked it very much, thanks, bro! :-)

Hey HolzMichel, thanks for the very insightful video. Can you please just expand on the origins of white and red pines? Can you also please explain the differences between pine wood from New Zealand, pine wood from Canada and pine wood from Russia?
