Johnson Viking 1 Ham Transmitter Part 3 High Voltage Repair Victory!

Yep, I'm addicted. Couldn't sleep thinking about that hacked Viking 1 transmitter high voltage short. So early to rise, coffee in hand, I hit the bench. Found many problems with the radio causing the malfunction. I finally got some wattage out of it, however only about half expected. I still believe the 4D32 tube is bad. Maybe due to mis-use in the past. Obviously someone has been inside performing magic. I will just have to keep plugging along. Eventually it will live again. Having fun with this challenge, but need to move onto higher priorities. Not sure when I will launch part 4. Glad your all enjoying the resurrection on the Viking!

Good to see you follow through on this old classic Terry. You are the man when it comes to Johnson's.

All it takes is a little poking around and the old Johnson'll come back up.

Love the way you all play off each other. Takes quick wit to parry sharp wit, even if the old git sometimes takes a hit.

Great video Terry. You need to sell those shirts! All of the controls on that beast makes it look like you are arm wrestling with an octopus!

Nice job!, I have a Bogen Challenger chb 100 it was like playing detective on the high voltage, but last night i finally got it working!, I just ordered new tube covers because the output tubes were picking up my cell phones data!

nice work from Indiana!

Way to go, Terry! A very nice job of trouble shooting. I would guess a previous owner found problems in the modulator circuit and was unable or didn't try to find replacement parts. It's a shame what happened during shipping. Wow. Anyway, thanks for sharing it with us. 73 de K7RMJ  Frank

nice rescue of a good old johnson. there is a cute trick to get the 80 meter VFO to excite the transmitter on 160 (use the correct coax cable and length to connect VFO to transmitter)

Awesome videos! Thanks for making them (also the intros are on point) I'd enjoy some more in depth explanation of your rationale during troubleshooting and some backround knowledge though to learn the skills of repairing vintage electronics. I'll enjoy D-lab videos anyway.

I am sure you seen them, I got some of the high voltage blue ceramic capacitors except mine are four or five times smaller then yours, I no they are making stuff smaller but the ones I got from Ali express tiny, some of the 30 k.high voltage, way smaller then a dime and you can see several.layers, anyone out there try any of these very small baby blue high voltage capacitors ? Thanks.D-lab for sharing love your videos.both you and your wife and your granddaughter.and the dog 👍👍
