E.F. Johnson Viking I Vintage AM/CW Transmitter

The Johnson Viking I was an amateur or ham radio transmitter sold in kit form or pre-built from about 1949 to 1952 and was capable of AM plate modulation or CW (Morse code). Notice the very high quality craftsmanship that went into this transmitter!

Hey Larry, cool old Rig! I purchased a Heathkit DX-100 AM, CW transmitter along with a Heatthkit SB-303 receiver. Cant wait to get those old timers on the air. They worked when I bought them but looking for someone to go through both units and possible re-CAP, Re-tube, ect. so that the gear is in top shape. Ben a ham since 1978 but was not active for many years. Great Videos! Keep em coming 73, Doug, KA0CLG, Saint Paul, MN.

You're right, don't see as much out there on the Viking I. I hope the restoration goes well. I'm currently working on a Viking II project that hasn't worked in 30 years. All the best, Larry. Will stay tuned for updates.

Really clean looking unit and hopefully doesnt take too much to get it back going. I always seem to have problems with pots freezing up. 73. Kevin KB0BRY.

My Dad had a Viking II. I used to operate the PLATE switch for him. I remember the relays clunking and the red light. I was maybe about 5 years old at that time. Hope to see it running soon, Randy

As always, very good video Larry. I worked on a couple of them back when I first started working on that stuff. I would change those cap's out also..

Nice transmitter! Had a Viking II with external VFO. Used it for 160 and 80 AM. Once you change filters, you could probably do a smoke test into a dummy load! Thanks for showing 73's Bob KC2RDU

Hi Larry. I would like to get more into AM. Right now, I just have a Kenwood TS140 and it does a good job on 40 meters AM. I do know of some hams out there who work AM and CW exclusively. They talk about the Viking a lot. Would like to see those tubes light up someday. 73, KC3BXZ Joe
