10 ATHLETES WHO GOT CAUGHT CHEATING
Sports and cheating have always gone hand in hand, no matter what some people say. In order to get
that elusive win, some athletes from different sports have resorted to illegal means that sometimes
even borderline criminal. Number one is an example of that so make sure you stay tuned as we give you
10 athletes who got caught cheating.
Number 10. The Spain Paralympic Basketball Team
This isn’t so much as the athletes cheating, but rather the person in charge. But the way things went, it’s
pretty obvious that the players were in on the deceit as well.
Fernando Martin Vicente, the former head of the Spanish Federation for Mentally Handicapped Sports,
sent athletes with no disabilities to the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney in order to win the gold medals.
The scandal broke in November 2000 when Carlos Ribagorda, a member of Spain's gold medal-winning
intellectually handicapped basketball team in Sydney, claimed that he and other athletes in categories
such as track and field, table tennis and swimming were not mentally deficient. Of the 200 Spanish
athletes at Sydney at least 15 had no type of physical or mental handicap - they didn't even pass medical
or psychological examinations. Ribargorda further stated that he had played for the Spanish Paralympic
basketball team for over two years but had no mental handicap.
The final team did comprise two players with IQs below 70 as required, but the other 10 posed as
mentally disabled players with the help of fake medical certificates they were provided with. They were
forced to return their medals and the category of intellectual disabled basketball was removed from the
Paralympic program after the 2000 Games.
Number 9. Rosie Ruiz
Rosie Ruiz, age 26, finishes first in the women’s division of the Boston Marathon with a time of 2:31:56
on April 21, 1980. She was rewarded with a medal, a laurel wreath and a silver bowl; however, eight
days later Ruiz is stripped of her victory. Why though? Well, it was found out that she only joined the
race just about a mile before the finish line. What did she do during the start of the race? Apparently,
she got on the subway.
Although Ruiz never explained why she cheated, it has been suggested her boss was so impressed she
qualified for the prestigious Boston race that he offered to pay her way. It’s believed that Ruiz intended
to jump into the middle of the pack of runners but miscalculated when she joined the marathon one
mile from the end, not realizing she was ahead of the other 448 female competitors.
Number 8. Dora Ratjen
Dora Ratjen was a German athlete who participated in Olympics and other championships in the
women’s category that is despite being a man.
The thing is, he probably didn’t do it on purpose, as you will soon find out. Born on November 22, 1918,
Dora Ratjen was dressed and brought up as a girl because of a deformation of his genitalia that confused
the midwife, who at first said it was a boy and after five minutes declared it to be a girl. Nine months
after his birth, Ratjen fell down and was taken to a doctor who examined his genitalia and told his
parents to let it be since nothing could be done about it. Then, they named her Dora and brought him up
as a girl.
He did however realize by age 10 that he was actually a boy, but never discussed his true feelings with
his parents. He then went on to set the world record for the women’s high jump.
It all ended when on September 21, 1938, while travelling on an express train from Vienna to Cologne,
Ratjen was arrested for dressing up like a woman following a report by the train’s conductor to a police.
The subsequent investigation showed what Dora already knew, that he was actually male, and was
charged of fraud. The charges were later dropped and Ratjen promised to stop participating in sports.
Number 7. Sammy Sosa and Albert Belle
Perhaps under the constant pressure of a big-money contract and a home runs race, Sammy Sosa, who
was already outed for using steroids, was discovered as a cheater in yet another way after a single
swing. When Sosa made contact with an inside fastball, his bat shattered into a bunch of pieces,
exposing a cork lodged in the beginning of the barrel.
Sosa claimed it was a practice bat that accidentally got mixed into his game time rotation. Sosa was
suspended and his already fleeting reputation was further tarnished.
