This scratch cornbread recipe is far superior to any mix on the market. This cornbread is not only scrumptious, but you can make this quick bread in just minutes with a few simple ingredients. Make it savory or sweet to suit your preference.

Cornbread
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 - 4 tablespoons granulated sugar
4 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
¼ cup vegetable or canola oil
1 egg

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. In a medium-sized bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add milk, egg, and oil. Mix until fairly smooth, about 1 minute. Bake in greased or sprayed 8-inch square baking pan or cast-iron skillet for 20 – 23 minutes or until wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

I love corn bread and I also am a savory girl. If you need something sweet you can always drizzle a little honey on it..very good.😊

I also prefer savory. I do not include any sugar in my recipe. Yours looks delicious! I also turn mine on to a plate because I like the crusty side up. I also bought a Texas shaped iron skillet so my grandkids pick which city or region they want to eat. Might as well learn geography too!

I'm In Missouri but I love pinto beans and corn bread then the next day i will have corn bread in a glass of milk.
