I periodcially spray them and other rubber components under the hood liberally with 303 Protectant . And when I change my oil using a mechanics lift . I also liberally spray 303 Protectant on all the rubber components underneath . This to resist drying out and cracking .

How can I differentiate a rattle at idle caused by a failing engine mount vs a rattle at idle caused by a failing timing chain?

Don't use a jack and a piece of wood unless you're an expert? Experts would have the right gear to begin with. As long as the ground and wood are stable it should be OK.
