A Very Unique & Rare Buffet Clarinet!

In this video we check out a rare and strange looking Buffet Clarinet. This is the clear plastic Buffet B12 which was made in limited numbers in the early 1990s. These are not available for sale, unless you find one pre-owned, but we wanted to let you know what it sounds like!

Regarding different materials, one idea for Dawkes, because I saw nobody demonstrating it: what are the differences between different woods in a clarinet? As far as I'm aware, Buffet clarinets alone come in 4-5 different types of wood / materials at least, maybe more. Ebony, rosewood, mopane, boxwood, then the hybrid materials, etc. How they differ? It's a question from us mere mortals who are playing old ebony clarinets. Ta!

I got of these from Giora Feidman together with one of his custom Pomarico crystal mouth pieces. Unfortunately it got damaged in a drop and, unsurprisingly, it’s hard to find an expert for acrylic clarinet repairs…

I remember having one of those on loan and expecting my students to want one immediately! Strangely, although they were fascinated they didn't want to stand out as 'different'. On another matter, availability of clarinets seems to be relatively poor these days. Few samples available of the top clarinets and full purchase price required if these are on trial! A far cry from the days when I chose 2 R13 Prestige instruments from a selection of 10 Bbs and 10 As. I hear there is also a year-long waiting list if you head to Paris and try to select at Buffet direct. How is a pro player supposed to work with that?
