► Detailed videos on these openings

In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov reveals the top 5 most shocking chess openings that are surprisingly effective and can lead you to a lot of victories. These openings involve unconventional moves that may seem dubious at first glance but are actually quite powerful.

Some of these openings are so rare that they'll catch your opponents off guard right from the very first moves! You’ll also discover some tricky and aggressive gambits packed with nasty traps.

One of these openings even includes a variation where White makes 10 consecutive pawn moves without moving a single piece—and still wins!

That Duras gambit variation was wild, a pretty epic trolling opening! Hadn't seen that one before, thanks!

the caro kann advance strat doesn't work on me because I just push c5 first then develop my bishop

Opening 1: I disagree with Bc5 being an oversight because of d4. After d4, Black plays Qh4+ and White has to play Kf3, as after g3 (as in the mainline) fxg3, Kh2 Qxd4 follows. White will have to live with a very exposed king!

3:44 im going with "multi purpose knight" (defend and attack)

ChatGTP suggests "knight fork defense" for attacking and defending a piece at the same time. Interesting question.

Hi Igor, thanks for this video. I was quiet amazed with all opening lines and studied and learned them all yesterday evening to understand ever move. Looking forward to start your masterclass. Thanks for all the learning: you make it super fun to learn to understand chess!!

Edit: but in reality 🤣🤣, I love it when you say it because in reality, opponent cannot do much 👌

What is your opinion on "the cow" style opening? As white or black? Any open where the knights go directly in front of the Q&K? Specifically with pawns only 1space in front of both knights?

I've never seen an adequate answer to Bc5+ d4 Qh4+ (or Bc4+ d5 Qh5+ in the original Duras gambit)

You're the best online chess teacher I know of. However, when running through some of the lines in Arena Chess with Stockfish 17, I noticed that some of the lines do not correspond to the best moves possible (eg. in your E4 & D4 opening videos). So are the variations you teach against the most common moves people make and not what is optimal? (I guess I answered my own question actually...)

I like that Knightmare opening, good to see the mistake of taking the Queen too soon.

The Grob line you showed has a flaw.

1. g4 d5 2. Bg2 Bxg4 3. c4 dxc4 4. Bxb7 Nd7 5. Bxa8 Qxa8 6. f3 e5

and black is better.
