Not a rocky relationship... he is just saying, that they are not just a father and a kid, they are now to grown men and they are saying goodbye! His father was dying of kidney cancer but after James made this, a family member came forward and donated a kidney❤ and yes, it is his father in the video😊

I interpret him saying "I'm not your son. You're not my father" as him letting his dad know that it's okay to not always be the strong "dad". The parental roles are switched in this song.

Both James and his dad were military men and they shared a very regimented outlook and so sentimentality is very hard for them to express .This was a very emotional song for them both.

That is not cold! It is him saying, dad, you can let go of worrying about me, parenting me, we are grown now. I am ok. It is one of the most heart felt songs about saying goodbye to a parent. I was so excited to see you review this and I am kind of sad at your reaction. But it is yours, and that is what music is about.

Yes, that is his dad, with whom he had a good relationship with. His dad had terminal kidney disease, and this was Blunt's "goodbye" song. The good news was a relative saw this, and donated a kidney that saved his father's life.

So your take on the song being about them not getting along was off, which is actually good since you have to think of it as saying goodbye to someone you really loved.

I had cared for, and watched my dad die of dementia. When I first heard this song it hit me like a ton of bricks. The toughest day of my life was walking into his room and the person that taught me to be a man no longer recognized my face. It's a hell I wouldn't wish upon anyone.

It's a father and son sweeping away the baggage between them. They're saying goodbye as two very old friends who know each others failures and successes. There's respect and gratitude being exchanged in the song.

I have heard this song many times and crying every time, if you don't cry you don't have heart ♥

Lovely reaction yall. 'Im not your son your not my father' is actually a loving and beautiful phrase, when we are older adults we begin to understand that when there is a tragedy looming, labels and roles are stripped away and we are simply humans in need of comfort and love.

He wrote this song when his dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he ang it raw and refused to change the sound, that's his dad in the video , a distant cousin was tested as a donor and it was a match, he's doing well now, I look after my mother who has Alzheimer's, this song touches deep x

I said goodbye to my Dad in 2002.
When this song came out, i avoided it like the plague.
My first time listening, and i am emotionally wrecked for the day.
Thanks James.

His father was dying here, he only had one kidney and it was failing, stage 4 kidney disease, and needed a kidney transplant, his children including James, weren't a match, he was on the kidney donor waiting list, but really there was no hope.
James was a captain and his father a Colonel in the British army, very high ranking and you don't show feelings or fear, as we say in the UK "A stiff upper lip"
Which makes this video even more heartbreaking.
This song and video is real, no acting, James wrote it after finding out his father was terminally ill.

Very good news, after this video was released, a distant cousin was tested and a match, he became a live donor and James's father is still alive
3 very brave men....

I have watched and sobbed through this amazing song so many times and I never thought they have a rocky relationship. James wrote this for his father, who is in the clip at the end, when he was dying from kidney cancer. He got a transplant tho and survived. They have a beautiful relationship. The song is about the son doing for the dad what he did for him as a child, chasing the monsters away. I have seen others sobbing over this song, so you are allowed to show emotion.

It's Rumoured that just before James Blunt who was an army captain went to war in the Kosova conflict that lasted from 1998-1999 was told from his father the Gentleman in the video the famous line Your not my son I'm not your father were two men saying goodbye and also his father before this video was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease non of his kids were a match for him but when this song was released a distant relative in Australia saw the video and it turned out they were a match.

Seen several dozen reactions to this song and you guys are only the 2nd video that no one cried while watching it. BUT I also recognized your body language to be one that was trying really hard to not cry or even well up with tears so I'm still seeing this as a very, very close to showing that emotion.

He had a good relationship with his dad. This is his way of dealing with the emotion of the loss by detaching himself. It is when you have children of your own that this song really hits you in your deepest soul.

I didn't hear anything like a rocky relationship!! Yes, his dad. Time for the boy to take care of the dad, keep him safe, chase the monsters away ---- I'm not your son, etc only means we're no longer child & adult/son father, etc, only too grown men together as equals. I think you guys missed it partly this time, although I REALLY liked seeing Brad have an actual viceral, emotional response.

Fun fact: during the filming of the video, and as it progressed, James Blunt and the crew were breaking down crying cause it's such an emotional song with an emotional message, and James's father, who is in the video, looked around and said; 'why is everyone crying?'

Whenever I hear this song it tears me up. Memories instantly come back of my daddy dyeing from lung cancer caused by years of smoking, working in a rock quarry, and getting showered with Agent Orange in Vietnam. His phone call to me wanting to be sure we were okay, that I could air out any problem with him I ever had, with no worries of him getting mad about it, and he would free talk about all of it, with no judgements. I think it surprised him when I said that we were good and that maybe he wasn't always perfect, but he was always right, and I wouldn't change anything. Then the memories jump to the hospital on father's day, yes father's day, in 2006. Holding his hand as he slipped away, feeling the warmth leave him and promising him I wouldn't let him down. It's funny how at the age of 33, I was still just a kid wanting to make his daddy proud. Here I am now at 49 and nothings really changed.

Wow, sorry for the bumming out there folks! The song is a great one, the video makes it better ( and worse ). Guys, if you still have your parents, Grandparents, or even Great Grandparents, don't waste time, it's never too early or late for forgiveness and love. I can think of nothing worse than living with regret. If you still have time, use it, you will be glad you did. Even if it doesn't turn out well, you know the regrets will not be yours to live with because you tried.

Brad, I only know of your brother. He seems like a great young man, as do you. Call him just to tell him you love him.

Lex, I only know of your mother. She seems to be a wonderful woman, as do you. Call her, tell her you love her, and that we all think she did a great job raising you.

You both may be surprised the direction such unexpected calls like that can go. It may be nothing special, but it may just be the single greatest conversation you ever had with each other. Time is coming for us all, do what you can while you can to prevent those regrets people!
