1. school club (joining too many clubs, dilute your focus, the theme is unclear-why did you participate?)
select a few clubs that actually align with your theme
having a theme is always the most important thing! (evaluate whether your summer program etc. are gonna help or not)
2. Summer Programs! - college classes (e.g. Harvard)

They do not guarantee, they do not show depth since they are normally introductory! They are also not easy to get into! You are way too comfortable.
-camp-style pre-college summer program (e.g. engineering program)
no DEPTH! Can they show your personality interest etc.
WHAT TO DO: 1) Internship & research position-networking
-go out of your comfort zone
-DEPTH
-possible rec
2) passion project
DOMINO effect
hope that helps!

If you’re shooting for a religious school, would you say it’s more important to focus on something academic as your passion or something faith-based?

What would you replace those school clubs with then? Are national/international nonprofits better or the same? Not really sure what to replace those 4-5 school clubs with.

People should do what they are genuinely interested in rather than doing everything just for the purpose of getting into college. It’s just so shallow!

what about summer programs that have helped you gain your academic interest. For example, I attended this summer program called Girls Who Code and that where I found my passion for computer science. After that I started a club and am teaching other girls how to code. I am currently doing a program by UC Berkeley's Society of Women Engineers where we are exposed to many different types of engineering and computer science jobs/majors and we learn more about different career paths in STEM. We also work on a coding project of our choice with a group and mentor. Would this make sense to put down on my college application?

do you think an out of state student going to a pre college program can be beneficial for personally determining if you’d be a good fit in that environment? for example, columbia is my dream school but i live in a small town in virginia. so i’m thinking about applying for an nyu program that allows students to stay in an nyc dorm for a week to get a sense if i could handle the environment of such an overwhelming city. do you think that would helpful?
