Here are my beginner chapter book recommendations. These are some options of series that you can turn to when your child is just beginning to be able to sit down with a chapter book and read it independently. These are short books with short chapters, pictures, and simple stories that appeal to kids. The beginning of independent reading is an exciting stage, and you want to choose books that will excite your children's interest as they begin their journey into reading on their own!

Usborne: Look for the Young Readers Paperbacks, particularly the simplified versions of classic novels, as well as the non-fiction books.

Our daughter loves the A to Z Mysteries. The characters are generally polite and smart, and each of the 26 mysteries is notably different.

Thank you for these great book suggestions. Have to admit I’ve been snobby about abridged versions too but seeing my great but reluctant reader shy away from long books, I’m prob now going to bring those in. Also loved hearing about the books you disliked. Agree about the minor b jones.

Hi! Could someone tell me why Geronimo Stillton might be a problem? My dd just begged for the first Tea Stillton book.

Hi its Victoria from home Educating the mad lads on the husbands phone. Love your vids they are always so helpful. Your right you should think not what my kid should read but what can they read. All kids are different x we can buy usbourne books in shops in the UK but they area pricey. I always feel stupidly happy when I pick some up second hand at a bargain price.
I think the abridged versions of classics really help lay the foundation for them to understand and appreciate the full story later on x

I'm much older but like kid books - around 2000 I went with a new friend to her sister-in-law's house and her kids were in K and 1st grade seems like - maybe 1st and 2nd - and they were big-time into Junie B Jones. I picked some up and was reading and was pretty shocked at what that kid got away with - I'd been too afraid to even think some of htat stuff LOL! I see the appeal to a kid though- and I read a lot as an adult that I don't agree with for myself but enjoy reading but still not sure I'd want to buy them for a kid
