Want to know something positively disgusting? The average person sweats out about 1/2 a pint of perspiration each and every night.

Seeing as how we spend almost 1/3 of our entire life lying horizontally on a mattress - one would think it would stand alone atop of our list of regular cleaning duties..but lets face it, we rarely think about cleaning the mattress.

Mattresses can harbor spills, stains, dirt, dust, dust mites and worse - so, maintaining a clean mattress is important for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that your partially clothed body is lying on top of it with only a sheet separating you.

As a 20 year old man, one of the most embarrassing moments of my life was when my family saw the mattress I used for my entire teenage years, just covered in the grossest stains. I was never taught to clean my mattress, or hardly ever even change my sheets.
I'm now watching all your videos to make sure my own place is as clean and fresh as possible!

My Mother taught me to always cover the mattress with a wool blanket (not man-made fibre) as this is absorbent, cover the blanket with a thick sheet, then your regular bedding on top. It really keeps the mattress clean.

Had our mattress for 18 years, and it still looks like new! We use covers, a foam mattress on top of the main one (which gets changed every 2 years) and hoover the mattress at least once a month. Good tips and advice.

I use a mattress cover. It was required while purchasing our mattress to keep the warranty valid. I swear by them. Our mattress looks brand new. And this is saying A LOT! 👍🏼 thanks for the tips. I use some of them already, but enjoyed the video. Keep them coming.

After my cat peed in my bed and totally ruined the mattress, the guy at the store recommended buying a mattress protector when I went to buy a new mattress. It cost about $150 but it was really worth it. My cat has been sick, and sure enough she peed again. The protector took a hit, but the mattress was totally fine and didn't have any stains or odors. Tossed the protector in the sanitize cycle and it was ready to get back to work.

Suggestion honey, to keep you from alot of work. At the mattress stores, you can buy a waterproof mattress cover. I bought this because my cat has a tendency to puke almost anywhere including on the bed. Basically, this means that the bottom side of the mattress cover is waterproof, while the top side feels like the mattress. It's about a quarter of an inch thick and can be washed in the washer, and yes dried in the drier (on the low heat tumble dry settings). The cover cost me $80 but is well worth it. And it will save you the hour or more work you just put into that mattress. Just wash it in the washer every month or two.

Any woman of... um, child bearing age, NEEDS a mattress protector! Like seriously.  Besides, its terribly embarrassing when you're getting help moving and there's a big blood stain on your mattress.

I knew a mold and allergy specialist who told me to use borax and spread it on the mattress for an hour and then vacuum. The borax will kill mites, fleas, and neutralize several allergens. To clean proteins or fats with borax, you can mix it with a little lemon juice. Borax is a great product for people who are allergic to dust and bed mites. He said you could also sprinkle it in your carpet for an hour and vacuum it up.

Our mattress has a protection sheet. Its so awesome, its thick. It helps if you are a girl, and you get your period.
