Putin’s top 3 lies: from Ukraine to the Second World War | Defence in Depth

When Russia invaded Ukraine last year, the myth of its military capabilities in the European theatre – still potent thanks to mental images of Red Army tanks storming across Eastern Europe in the dying days of World War Two – was shattered overnight.

But we should not have been so surprised. For years, Russia has distorted its history, contorted it so profoundly, that we, just like millions of ordinary Russians, can no longer measure modern Russia according to the most important metric: reality.

In this episode of Defence in Depth, Francis Dearnley, The Telegraph’s Assistant Comment Editor, examines three of the most significant corruptions of historical truth frequently proclaimed in Putin’s Russia, and their implications.

What Francis didn’t mention, is that getting those Lend-Lease supplies to Russia via Murmansk and Archangel, cost some 85 merchant ships and 16 warships of the Royal Navy.

Britain and America paid in blood, as well as treasure, to support Russia during that time.

Kruschev himself stated that the Soviet Union couldn't have survived without Lend-Lease.

Imagine how former soviet republics and other countries of eastern bloc had to deal with Moscow's idiocy for decades.

Regarding the USSR's role in starting WWII - It was a great enabler of Germany & quickly joined in the invading of Polish land. And let's not forget the 1939 massacre of the Katyn forest in which 20, 000 Poles were executed. The USSR is almost as guilty for WWII as Germany.

Some people seem to forget that China was at war with Japan before 1939, that Germany was at war with the British Empire from 1939 and that while the USSR fought in eastern Europe, the other allies fought in the Atlantic, the Pacific against the Japanese, the Mediterranean and Africa, India (including the brave Indians who are underappreciated) and the bombing campaign against Germany, without which would also have left the USSR vulnerable.

Let me just correct a few mistakes:

1. Germany didn't invade Russia in world war I. Russia mobilized its troops secretly at the border to Germany prior to the outbreak of war, preparing to invade Germany in concert with France.
