Earth from Space: Great Rift Valley, Kenya

The Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission takes us over part of the Great Rift Valley, Kenya, in this week's edition of the Earth from Space programme.

The Great Rift Valley was another wonder of nature that Kenya was lucky to inherit. Volcanic eruptions that occurred more than 400 million years ago, created in its weak mountains with low flat plains across the continent. The Great Rift Valley at its narrowest point just a few kilometres from Nairobi, offers easy access to short stayers in the Kenyan capital to see its beauty. The vast expanse of the area of undulating plains, of several lakes looming in the distance, farmlands and animal sanctuary was overwhelming to visitors like me, for the sheer beauty that it presented before your eyes.

Is there correlation between the presence of The Great Lakes, Victoria, Malawi, Tanganyika and others with the Rift Valley or is the Rift Valley too far from those to be related? In other words, Will East Africa cleave away from the rest of Africa and a new Sea or Channel from the Indian Ocean separate the newly formed continent around the region where the Great Lakes are?

Not surprising, It has been happening since Millions of Years. Our Continents are formed due to this process. We should feel lucky that we have seen something like this, breaking of a Mini Continent, happen in Our lifetime.
