Toriyama made my day when he asked us to just sit down and enjoy watching Gt together and not argue about it being canon or not. Besides I love the idea that they both exist in different timelines seeing as how there were 5 time rings in the box meaning there are 5 confirmed timelines as of super.

The original argument to who’s stronger was with the fusion dance you need someone that not only mirrors the dance but also some who is as strong or slightly stronger or weaker than each other. With Potara that didn’t really matter (I’m pretty sure. It’s been years since I’ve read DBZ manga).

But with power ups coming out of nowhere constantly I’d say that that doesn’t really matter anymore.

A battle of attrition for sure would be the only way to tell bc of how powerful not only Vegito is but also Gogeta

The fusion dance also wears out if use to much energy gotenks defused faster because he used to much energy makin that cannon, also old kai originally confirmed that the potara fusion is stronger than the dance

Fusion dance drains the time too as other comments said but I wanna point out one thing: the reason why Gogeta seems to last longer is because he keeps it clean with barely any super attacks while Vegito is all about them style points

Now the fusion dance almost doesn't even need goku to power down considering they're almost equals and have already reached the peak of their strength according to the super hero movie.
The only difference now is the time limit and vegito having a rival boost according to the supreme kai.

Except we KNOW that Gogeta's timer can get drained as well because it happened to SSJ3 Gotenks. Just because we dont see when Gogeta fuses in the broly movie doesn't mean he fused on time. We also had no reference of time. The fight could have been only 5 minutes for all we know. Vegito still wins.

Do keep in mind that in DBZ Gotenks defused faster than he should have because his ssj3 "drained the time limit faster".

It would appear that no matter if it's potara or dance, the time-limit is shortened the stronger the fusion is.
Which really makes sense. The characters are simply too powerful to maintain the fusion for that long.
