Farmer Ismail Acar is never sure when the ground might open up beneath him. Three years ago, it gave way under the wall of his barn, thankfully when his sheep were outside. Then, an 11 metre-deep hole opened up in his sweetcorn field, swiftly followed by another one just metres away.

There are around 50 sinkholes on Acar’s land in Konya, Turkey, where he works alongside sheer drops of up to 30 metres that are eerily circular and swallow up more earth as time goes by.

Náhlé kulovité propady jsou vbýsledkem vyrovnávání energetických hladin. Něco jako propady země ve Hvězdných válkách.
