Should You Be Shooting at 24FPS or 60FPS?

A classic filmmaking question...which frame rate should you use? There are many reasons why you might shoot in 24fps, 60fps, or any other frame rate. In this video, I'll break down some of those reasons in hopes of helping you decide which frame rate is best for you.

What other filmmaking topics would you like to learn about?

I came to this video as a complete dunderhead when it comes to filming. I left knowing what I needed to know - all explained very clearly. Thanks.

I do want to recommend something here, If you want to shoot 60fps and keep it in real speed, Use 1/60 shutter and not 1/120, that way you maintain motion blur, looks more natural and better for low light.

Kellan, great job explaining this topic. Thanks ...

I would point out a couple of things here.
1. Sometimes you DON'T want to shoot at 1/48 or 1/50 or 1/120 shudder speed; if you want the kind of choppy-yet-crisp film effect you see in the action scenes from "Gladiator" or "Saving Private Ryan", you'll want to shoot at 1/96 second or 1/192 second shutter speed (or 1/[4x or 8x your frame rate]). This causes you to see every frame distinctly rather than blurring them together, and you see distinct water droplets and particles flying through the air instead of splashes or blobs of dirt, but exaggerates the relatively low frame rate as a result of less blur.

2. Shutter speed doesn't matter that much when you're shooting 60p.
Working with broadcast cameras, we usually turn the electronic shutter off altogether.
You have enough frames per second at 60p that you can't usually see the difference between shutter speeds (other than your video getting lighter or darker).

Your videos are so easy to follow, thank you. can i ask why its easier to sync music at 24fps then a higher rate. thanks again

Here in Europe (= PAL- region) the best way to go is 25 FPS as baseline, and 50 resp. 100 FPS for slow motion.
But why did you omit 30 FPS in your discussion?

It’s amazing how much easier it is when audio isn’t needed because you’re adding music instead.

Thanks for helping explain this! If I’m using my iPhone to record, is 24 fps better than 30fps for YouTube?

Wouldn't it make sense to always shoot in 60fps and then edit in 24fps? This way it gives you the option to do some slow-mo

If I shoot at 60fps and put it in a 24fps timeline, what frame rate should I export it too?

What happens when your shutter is too high on 24fps?

Thanks for the vid. I understand all your points. However, let’s say my “movie’ calls for action shots so I want that 60 fps. But then in another shot I would like the cinematic 24 fps look. How to combine?

Very interesting. I've been using 30 fps but I'll be trying 24 next time for sure. Why don't you use 120 fps for slowmo?

Good primer on frame rates - informative and to the point - thanks. One question: why choose 24fps and not 30 fps as the alternative to 60 fps? Since I often record at 60fps to allow slo-mo in post, I shoot 30 fps as the more "cinematic" option. If I bring a project into a 30 fps timeline, I know that the two frame rates are going sync well. My understanding is that one may encounter issues or artifacts, for example, when using 24 fps files on a 30 fps timeline, though I've never actually tested this. Wondering if you have any thoughts on this.

but why did you shoot this video in 60fps?

But when we're shooting on the street, we're constantly moving and shooting at 24fps doesn't seem like the optimal option. So, what do you suggest?
