The French Greece - The History of Ancient Massalia (Marseille)

Показать описание
Marseille, formerly Massalia, is one of France's oldest cities, founded around 600 BC by Greek settlers from Phocaea, modern-day Turkey. It became a thriving center of trade and cultural exchange between the Greek world, Iberia, and Gaul. Marseille prospered through commerce in wine, olive oil, and ceramics, attracting diverse merchants and cultures. It faced challenges from Celtic and Ligurian tribes and sought Roman protection during the Punic Wars. Roman influence brought infrastructure improvements and cultural assimilation. Despite periods of turmoil, Marseille's Greek heritage endures in its architecture and cultural traditions.

Makes it just more beautiful that the Olympic flame arrived in France in Marseille, carried on a 19th century 3 mast tall ship carrying it from Greece.

Marseille, a city in southern France, was founded by the Greeks around 600 BCE. It was originally established as a colony called Massalia by Greek settlers from Phocaea. The city has a long history and has grown from its ancient origins into a major Mediterranean port.

MARSEILLE is one of those French cities that both Greek and Roman influence is felt even after millenias have passed by, very special city that is clear to everyone visiting. Greek influence was once felt on both nothern, southern, western and eastern part of Medditeranean sea, if they could sail there, they would settle there, they were truly pioniers

I am from Montpellier and we have a full area built in tribute to Greek architecture in memory of that time I guess. So we don't forget. I didn't know Marseille was Greek but doesn't surprise me actually u can feel it. Toulouse old city has more Roman influence in its buildings. We have also some vestiges from romans. We had both and this is what I love with my country/continent so many great influences. Plus Celtic, Viking and Slavic. We try to make the best out of them🙏❤️

Love this period of history of Hellenic Gaul. You can still find the scattered remnants of Greek temples in the region. Note - Gyptis was not a Greek princess, but Celto-Ligurian of the Segobrigii tribe. That's why the marriage united the two peoples.

One could argue that there was a French Greece in the Medieval era -that's when the French (Franks) took over large areas of Greece including Athens after the Fourth Crusade -known in Greek history as the Frankokratia,

Massilia was an independant ally of Rome until 49BC when they supported the losing side in the civil war between Caesar and Pompey.

Controversial views. How is it possible a Greek city being influenced by Rome when Rome is a colony of Greece ? How is it possible Massalia being influenced by surrounding barbarians on ? (!!!)

Merci pour ce très bel hommage à notre ville.
Juste une petite question :
1:05 "The Greek Princess..." ?
