Apple Pie = $1.50
Diet coke = $1.50
So he has to pay $8.50

Theorizing that he has 2 of 5 dollars in his hand, he would get a change of $1.50.
Theorizing yet again that the robber gave him a penny and either a nickle, dime, quarter or half.
The robber have scammed the man at least $0.99.
Conclusion is that the robber has pretty much robbed a restaurant and scammed a person for $0.99.
