July 28 @ 4pm Eastern (8pm UTC) - What is a Theory of Everything?
Moderated by Matt O'Dowd & Brian Keating
Featuring Max Tegmark, Stephon Alexander, James Beacham

In this 90 minute conversation we explore what Theories of Everything really are outside the hype, dig into the essential physics mysteries that compel us to search for one, and survey the major TOE contenders currently being explored by the physics community.

August 4 @ 10:30am Eastern (2:30pm UTC) - Theory of Everything Controversies
Moderated by Matt O'Dowd & Brian Keating
Featuring Lee Smolin, Eric Weinstein, Sabine Hossenfelder

Existing Theories of Everything have not yet produced experimental evidence that solves the fundamental challenges facing physics. That lack of progress has opened up a sea of controversy, from disagreements about the very necessity of TOEs, to questioning the cost/benefit of mega-billion dollar particle accelerators in search of them, to the emergence of competing TOEs from physicists outside of the academic community. In this 90 minute chat we dive into the existential questions around TOEs.

This is probably one of the best contents PBS Space Time ever produced. Many thanks guys

This was awesome! Love this new format. So glad that this will be a recurring feature. I could have listened to you all chat for another several hours. So great!

I really do hope one day I can hear you say:
"I'm Matt O'Dowd, this is Space Time, and today we bring you the Theory of Quantum Gravity"

This was a fantastic conversation to be able to listen in on! The entire panel was so thoughtful and contributed so much. Thank you!

Love it! Would love to hear a philosopher of physics in with this too, especially regarding the fascinating question of what is and isn't science, the legacy of Popper and so on. If anyone reading this is interested, David Albert is a great speaker and thinker on such things.

Tegmark is at the highest level of insight for modern physics

Stephon Alexander's notion of unquestioned assumptions are great. Could be very inspirational for Space Time to examine them.

You heard it here 1st, James Webb will discover that all these black holes in the globular cluster ultimately merge into a supermassive BH which causes the globular cluster galaxy to begin rotating turning them into spirals. Then all the new suns are born. The Milky Way was once a globular cluster until its supermassive BH evolved. Also explains all the heavy elements and how they get spread around. Our universe is also within another universe BH and each new BH creates a new universe within it. The big bang was the creation of a BH in another universe and our infinite universe. Thanks, Matt these videos are amazing.

Max kept trying to derail the conversation to be about information theory, and I loved it

Whoa, yeah, I understand why Max inspires so much respect from every side, this man is a giant!

Sorry if this is too long, but the double-slit experiment seems to contain an unsupported asumption. You measure an electron passing through spacetime point A and then measure an electron with the same properties being absorbed later at spacetime point B. You then assume that the two electrons are the same, so it must have followed a path from A to B. From this asumption you get a difficulty in topology. Confusing equality with identity is a common problem in mathematics.

Right after mentioning the possibility of consciousness without intelligence Max Tegmark said he’d promised not to talk about politics. Now what do you think he meant by that... ?

Simple Unified Theory (SUT). Gravitons, defined in the following way, are likely to exist.
Postulate 1: gravitons are the carriers of physics constants.
Postulate 2: wave function psi, solution to Scrodinger equation, describe one or more gravitons. (QM)
Postulate 3: gravitons expand from a point into a sphere of radius r=speed of light * time, unless captured by a particle system. (SR)

Gravitons expand like water ripples expanding in 4D spacetime. Gravitons overlap to fill all space with quantum states for position, momentum and spin.

Gravitons overlap to create Quantum Field theory fields.

Spacetime is made of gravitons. Gravitons have to expand because spacetime is expanding, because the big bang expanded from a point.

Gravitons look like water ripples because every open slit in the two slit experiment has interference patterns, standing waves (standing ripples).

The right triangle derivation of special relativity is based on two expanding gravitons, one passing by the other at velocity v.

Idk why but I feel much better after listening to this!

Current laws in physics have a single dimension (direction and value) for each quantity being measured in some equation. Life, consciousness, and intelligence are PATTERNS made up of several properties intertwined and, as such, require dimensions that exist in our universe for these properties to exist in (“to fly, you must already have wings”) and ways to define and predict such pattern “values” to use in defining the rules/laws controlling such patterns. This is much more complex than linear rules/laws of current physics.
