A lot of students who go into Computer Science programs go in with the wrong expectations. After consuming popular media, they’re convinced that Computer Science degrees will turn them into magical computer wizards who can build anything, and all they have to do is attend classes.

Computer Science courses are designed to create computer scientists and engineers and to equip them with knowledge to solve most difficult questions,
Not a software developer using javascript and react and hosting on aws with few commands and let everything taken care by the infrastructure. 😂

At the end of the day the job pool for both is basically identical. The curricula have a lot of overlap at most schools too. It's just a matter if you'd rather spend your lectures getting a bit more practical experience or learning how a compiler works

I wish my 10th grade teacher said this earlier. I gave up maths just to take computer science. In the end all I learn is how to perform extremely quick window swaps😅. You know, every teenagers experienced it.

i think there are definitely some things from computer science that knowing them will make your understanding of software better as well, i'd like to think i speak from some amount of experience when i say that, but overall if you're not going to build and design computer hardware and you're not going to work with things like AI or big data or analytics most of it would probably seem just novel and not actually very useful to you

The one place that explicitly differentiates between different types of engineering and other degrees would differ. In Quebec Computer Engineering isn’t recognized as a field of engineering under the order of engineers

It's such an inconvenience that American Universities have adopted the term "Software Engineering" instead of accurately calling it "Software Technicians".

Software Engineering in Canada has much more prestige than a Computer Science degree and Software Engineering is a much harder degree than CS. In Canada SE must take several Electrical, Electronics and Computer engineering courses alongside a full CS degree and some professional engineering courses.

But sure, if Computer Science is cool I guess... nice to know you have less math and statistic courses, less computer architecture courses, less OOP based courses and so many courses involving low-level languages like C, C++ and Rust.

I guess CS is still a better degree
