Society has started embracing the idea of referring to others by their preferred pronouns rather than what they appear to be. This week, we tested these Singaporeans’ ability to explain gender pronouns to the older generation in their mother tongue.

About Code Switch: Young Singaporeans seem to be losing touch with their mother tongue. So we're challenging them to explain a trendy topic to seniors under 5 minutes. The catch is, they can only speak in their mother tongue. For every English word spoken, $2 will be deducted from the prize money of $50.

I just felt so much better about my own Tamil now...But props to you for braving it...You brought up a real problem among Tamil youths in Singapore - proud of being Tamil but not using the language...Gotta watch more Tamil programmes...Tamil News shows a new word each day....And I believe there are a few Tamil words to use for transgender...Thirunar is a common one...Interestingly, there have been several Tamil movies with transgenders as main characters - Super Deluxe, Aruvi, Peranbu are the most recent ones that come to mind...In fact, that's how I learnt the word!...

The only big word that Hirzi used was 'menterjemah' la haha.. Other words were commonly used malay vocabs but he used them so aptly to explain like "golongan" and "bebas"

here’s my try on mandarin and malay:

Mandarin: 當一個人不想被生理性別侷限 認為自己性別超乎與生理性別時 （覺得自己可男可女，或沒有性別）我們應該把ta們 稱作 ta們 （單數非複數）注：部首沒有性別的差別

Malay: apabila sesetengah orang enggan didefinasi oleh jantina biologinya (lelaki rasa dia seorang perempuan, dsb), kita kena panggil mereka ‘mereka’ dan bukan ‘dia’
