Sounds like Mohammed heard a Jew or Christian mention "Moses striking the rock" (two events in the Torah, where Moses hitting a rock released a flow of water) and didn't know what it was actually about and made something out. Seems like something Allah would have known all about.

Do the famous story of the cow in surah bakarah. How bani israel had to hit a dead body with a piece of flesh of the cow and he resurrected, revealed his killer and died again. And perhaps a parallel story of how Sherlock Holmes would solve that case.

Moses had a speech impediment which is well documented in Judaism. It is the reason why his brother Aaron was chosen to be his spokesman.

The most ironic bit is that the source material for Moses - the Torah - explicitly says Moses had a speech defect and he is criticized in Jewish tradition for his having struck a rock!
