Over the past few months, I’ve been a student of Islam, though I was born and raised Christian. Tonight, I was watching a video on how to perform wudu and salat. But something about having to perform certain acts three times or more just doesn’t sit right with my spirit. I come from ancestors who were from the Caribbean that practiced the occult, and it just felt too eerily familiar with all of the calculated performances. Like, why can’t I just talk to my creator and connect with him that way? Why do we have to perform a number of acts and movements for our prayers and requests to be accepted? Those things are very common in witchcraft and the occult. I’ve been very fond of what I’m learning about Islam, but I can’t get past the performance part of it. It doesn’t feel authentic and feels very robotic.
