MotoIQ would not exist if it wasn't for the Nissan SR20DE engine and the 1990's cars the founders of the company drove when they met over 20 years ago! In this video Mike shows you the way we would build one of these engines today!

Anyone else just amazed by how much knowledge he has and how easily he able to explain it? 😳

I love how Mike seems like hes just about to laugh, love this. Its perfect for my plans with my SR as a beginner engine build, explained so well!

This guy's knowledge and ability to explain these builds is so fascinating. It's not just "build with this" but "why" for every little aspect. Every little detail on the piston even as to why it's important.

I've been running an s13 SR20DET in my auto-x Datsun 510 that's been making a reliable 374 whp on e85 for nearly a decade. The bottom end is all stock rebuild with a Greddy oil pan. The high port head was decked, ports are polished and matched to manis, stock guides valves, and retainers with mild Tomei cams and two stage springs. 22psi from a GT-X2867R on a log mani. 50K + miles on it and it's running as strong as the day we fired it up. I'm an SR20 fanboy and proud of it.

Mikes’s the man! When I used to drive a Nissan SE-R back in the early 2000’s. I used to be in the SR20 forum and talked to Mike about building my SR20. There weren’t many people at the time building and making parts for the SR20’s. I went all out had the block cleaned, heads ported, intake matched, ECU tuned, had water injection kit map, had cams by Jim Wolf technology. I had a JUN flywheel, ARIAS forged pistons, Swain coated them, forged Crower rods, ACT stage 3 clutch, custom turbo kit ( no one made any for the SER) by HotShot, and Mike recommended me to use the HKS GT turbo forgot the size ( but didn’t do it because no one ever done it and was afraid it won’t fit) so I ended up with a turbonetics T3/T4 that Rob Cadle recommended. I forgot who he worked for ( Garret?) but they made turbos. But my dream and probably one of first few built Nissan SER with a built engine never happened. Spent at least 15k if not more on parts. Due to one person screwing things up from the start making promises but never came through. Ended up finding a shop to try to fix the mess but it ran like shit. Due to the fact they didn’t take it apart and they were not Nissan experts. Only if I lived in California. 😔. But Mikes the man. I don’t think if he remembers me about our conversations about my SER turbo options.

I first encountered Mike's big brain with the Suck, Squish, Bang, Blow series in Sport Compact Car magazine over a decade ago - now here I am, getting my stuff together for a potential SR20DET swap into my '77 Datsun 620. I've come full circle!

I got a head to look at 🤣blew my sr20det that was bought as an OE rebuild and unknown miles with Tomei PodCams. With a handful of bolt on upgrades it was tuned to 367whp and 341wtq. Mainly took it to drift days for about 7 years and 2 transmissions later think we floated a valve and melted into cylinder 2 or exactly what you're talking about on the rocker arm stoppers is more than likely what happened! Bottom end still looks brand new with little scoring in the cylinder walls. Time to figure out a game plan for rebuild and definitely will be indexing this video!

You have had a lot of requests to look over the SR20...

Thankyou comments section and you fine sir for this invaluable content.

I'm building up a catalog of parts now for a VE engine so a video would be much appreciated.

EDIT: Perhaps a mention about the SR oil pumps, their relief springs and how to deck the block with the oil pump included will be added to the next video.

Literally one of the coolest channels I've found. Kinda disappointed it took me so long haha

No idea what he’s talking about, but this is the second video I’ve come across that I find interesting from him.

I wish I had this video years ago when I tried to assemble an sr20det for drifting. I swapped the cams for bc264s with their springs and retainers. The engine ran fine until it spit a rocker and dropped a valve destroying the engine. I always felt the ras had a big part in the dropped valve. Now i'm soaking up all the info possible, since i'm almost done collecting parts for the top to bottom rebuild. Great content, i'm glad I found this channel.

I never get tired of this guy explaining the critical information about engine building! I have never learned anything near as much about engines and all the aftermarket parts from listening to anyone else ever in my life. This guy is like an engine building god in my opinion. When it's time for a new motor in a high performance car of mine, I will definitely be getting a motor from this guy!
