The Price of Paradise: ‘It Feels Like You’re Always Working in Hawaii’

Sometimes it feels like you're working all the time when you live in Hawaii. It's my busy season at work and it's been tough working and raising a family. Long hours have made it challenging to have family time, while also making sure my energy levels are good at work. So is it possible to keep a healthy work-life balance in Hawaii?

With the cost of living so high in Hawaii, many have to work long hours or multiple jobs to make ends meet. I'm thankful that I only have to work one job, but I recognize that many have to work multiple jobs and that sacrifice can mean less family and/or self-care time.

Filmed using the Canon Vixia G60.

I hope you don't abandon this YouTube project for a long time, Chris, because you bring a type of reflective content to this space that is hard to find regarding life in the 808. We love hearing your thoughts... My husband+I left the island after grad school and working due to the fact that we are teachers and were making next to nothing despite the high qualifications required to teach. We are raising our keiki (2 boys like you) in Orange County and it's a wonderful place to do so, but I must say that you are giving your little ones a gift by raising them on O'ahu that is worth more than anything I can think of. It is such a sacred place and although I have been blessed to live in different cities and countries throughout the years, there is nothing that I've found that compares. It's worth it even despite the grind and housing limitations. And how great for your parents that you are all there together!

Probably your most important video. I saw a video of yours probably a year or so ago and I thought you were disuading people from movng to Hawaii, but really you were just being realistic about the troubles of it. I do know some people who live quite well out there on ~$50k/year, but they have a 1 bedroom apartment and pretty much never go out to eat or travel. With that said, the median household income is around $88k/year, which gives a lot more breathing room, but still no chance of saving up to own property.

I don't believe that you want to disuade anyone from moving out there anymore (except to prevent someone from coming with unrealistic expectations). However, if you did, this would be the best video for it. It made me realize that I look forward to just raising kids. Where I'm from, it's too cold to go outside for half the year, so most of my memories are indoors. And they're honestly amazing memories. I'm sure they'd be equally amazing at the beach. But as a kid, it's much less about location and setting (within reason), and more about spending quality time with people who really care about you.

Why I left: Noisy where I lived, no parking anywhere, too much traffic, and lots of petty crime. What I miss: the ocean, the dance community, the food, my friends.

Beautiful video, I’m about to move to Hawaii to begin from cero at my age, I know sounds crazy considering the living expenses, however my biggest motto it’s faith .

The concluding scene of the famous movie "It's a wonderful life". features George Bailey, our hero and a father saying "I'm so glad that I have so many friends. We all generously support each other. It does not. matter that the evil bank president stole everyone's money and left town."
There are other things that are important than money.

I am feeling that pull toward family as well as my young children grow. It is tough having to work and be away from them more than I’d like, thanks for the video and I’d consider this yt channel your second job knowing how much effort and time it takes!

Amen. You got it right: “love is sacrifice.” That is the purest form of love.

This has got to be one of your best videos. On my last day in HI. My dad was just like your dad . My dad lived in Whittier California 10 years before me and he sacrificed to come home to HI. All his kids and grandkids were the center of his universe as well as my mom. My dad died 9 years ago and your video reminded me of him. Thank You. Aloha and back to Abq tomorrow.

I watched a YT video recently about how to be as wealthy as possible. The narrator said you have to avoid distractions such as going to nightclubs and dating. Romance is just a time suck that you need to avoid.
I left a comment that the video was depressing. If you have no one to share your happiness with, how happy are you ?
You may surrounded by fancy electronics but have no one to watch a movie with.

Well, living in Hawaii is very expensive, and you are correct. Time is priceless, and money comes and goes. We all want what's best for our kids and provide the best we can, as our parents did for us. I wish you success, joy and happiness with your ohana. From Maui

In the classic story "A Christmas Carol". Bess, the female engaged to be married to Mr Scrooge, breaks off the engagement when he starts spending more and more time at the. accounting office. She wants more companionship than he is willing to give. What good is being married if your future husband gives you money but not emotional support?

College life has a different stress than now. Just get good grades, work a mellow job on the side. Now its worry about money every day in my sales job. I'm less easy going.
