Fun fact, Gioachino Rossini lived until 1868, which means that Rossini not only at one point was a competitor to Beethoven but also lived to see the birth of Italy as one country (1860), the American Civil War, three French Revolutions, and shortly before his death, the unification of Northern Germany under Bismarck.

Rossini was to create his William Tell (with its iconic overture) just four years after Beethoven's 9th (again with a triumphant conlcusion, only this time it is a galop.
