Of all the versions of Ganondorf, the TotK version at least tried to mess with Link's psyche (even though it was obvious that the Zelda popping up then disappearing around Hyrule was a fake). His mistake was the same as the OoT Ganondorf in that he allowed Link too much time to run around and regain his strength/abilities (if Link isn't doing a speed-run).

He enjoys using Link's love and affection on his princess as way to beat him psychologically.
