Arizonan here. This voucher program was voted down by direct ballot initiative, then rammed through anyway by the republican governor at the time. It has caused a lot of harm to our public schools here.

Public schools can save America. IF they are run and funded accordingly. Politics get involved and things will go to hell.

When we talk about charters, we need to differentiate between public charters and privately run charters. Here in CA, we have tons of public charters that are part of the school district (or have are a 501c3 nonprofit with a charter under a County Office of Education). They follow the standards, calendar, and some governance as the rest of the school district but have a special curriculum focus like the arts, project based learning, STEAM, Montessori, or eco-sciences (school gardens, climate science etc) or offer independent home/online learning. As public charters, they are held to same standards and annual testing.

For academic achievement by students, living in an area with a higher average minimum wage and with a parent who had higher education were MUCH MORE highly correlated than money spent on students by schools, marital status of mother, and race!!!!

Good public schools are what any decent society needs to prosper, gatekeeping education, and making it another commodity for those who can afford it, is horrible. Even if everyone was able to go, but it was just subsidized by the government (us, the taxpayers, like it already is) it would add a layer of privatization, and any sector that is privatized is made worse, like our healthcare systemm

If public schools were funded more, then local populations would be smarter, the communities: would be more productive, would self-improve, and collectively improve the economy.

Unlike public schools who have to show growth, charter schools don't, so students are graduating without the ability to read, write or do simple math. Walking into charter schools, I often encounter charter schools showing movies

You want your kids to learn religion take them to church. Do they think churches should be forced to teach math and english?

If you ask me, we should do what Finland has done. Eliminate private schools. This would force the rich people to send their kids to school with everyone else. You can bet those rich parents would be demanding better opportunities, better discipline, better books, ect. Rich kids would learn along with the poor and the middle class, and perhaps develop empathy for others.

Strengthen the curriculum, eliminate high stakes standardized tests, and give teachers the freedom to go more in depth, to be creative, ect.

Develop required courses in critical thinking and media literacy starting in middle school.

Unlike Religious "Schools" Public Schools teach actual Facts, History, Science, Math, English. Not Fairy Tales masquerading as education.

maybe things have changed -Im over 50. But transgenderism has never been a 'threat' for me. I don't think I've ever known or met one. Went to public schools... I dunno

Sam’s reaction to what is happening in Oklahoma was priceless. That is how we react *every. day*. And that’s not even 1% of everything that Ryan Walters is doing. He thinks he has more power than he actually does, and not one elected official is doing anything meaningful to try and stop him - even though things he’s trying to do are straight up against the law. Thankfully many districts are brave enough to fight back against him(not only because they are following the law, but also to protect their students) despite the many threats he constantly makes toward them. It’s getting really, really bad and scary here. Just look up what happened last week and you’ll get an idea of what I mean.

And in case anyone was wondering how Oklahomans feel about him, he has a 28% approval rating and 52% want him impeached. So. lol.

I have complete confidence in & respect for public school systems, having attended (K-12) & graduated from public school(s). The ONLY pitfall of public school is that each state is able to implement its own curriculum, which is why I believe that the DOEd should streamline K-12 public schools’ curricula nationwide, considering that they’re all federally funded.
That public school is federally funded, is also why it’s inexcusable that some states’ systems provide wonderful educations for their students w stellar results to show for their teachers’ exemplary work, while other states’ systems are barely educating their kids at all.
& States whose school systems are languishing at the bottom of annual national rankings, aren’t just doing an enormous disservice to the students themselves, they’re actively crippling the future governance of their own states by not investing in multiple generations of students, or preparing them to eventually take over leadership roles & positions, which are existential to a functioning state!
Streamlining public school curricula for each grade & every state would help the entire country. But beyond that & most importantly, we owe that to the children of this country … they deserve the best education that the richest country in the world can afford to provide! The most highly educated states annually rank on par w the leading countries in the world, so there’s absolutely no excuse that *EVERY* state shouldn’t be ranked equally as high!

Hearing that public schools are the biggest employer in a small town is kinda wild. I thought it was usually the prison

Public schools mostly teach you stuff that you NEVER use in real life.

Limited vouchers are best policy.Teachers' unions have made excuses for the mediocrity of the public school system in America for decades.Diversity is not more important than having a child actually learn basic academic skills .

A profit motive makes education worse not better. We have a lot of experience that shows that. That's all you have to say when you argue against charter schools.

Arne Duncan is no friend of public educaron. As CEO in Chicago, he closed 50 schools. As well as, oversaw and applauded further militarization of our schools
