Many, many public school teachers put their own children in private schools. This has been happening for decades. DECADES!!!!

My kid goes to charter, and EVERYRHING is free. I mean everything. Uniforms, all meals and snacks, supplies, hell, even field trips! They make sure that every child can feel involved and enough regardless of their families income. All you gotta do is show up and do your best. They have attendance rewards all the time, and if you do well, you get prizes.

Competition is good for the world, it creates creativity as well as destroys monopolies

Here’s the real controversy in education; it’s not the money, the school or the teachers that makes a good school - it’s the students. The reason charter schools and magnet school do well is because of the students you put in them. Most charters and magnet schools have an academic standard to maintain or you return to your home school. It’s a recipe for school success: interested kids apply, qualified students are selected, they agree to a set of standards, if they fall below the standards they return to their home school. So each year the schools are purged of the students that didn’t maintain the standards required to remain at the school. Don’t get me wrong, I’m in favor of this process. My kids attend magnet schools. My son, a senior, tested to get into kindergarten. There were 160 seats and students got in by merit and their placement test score. The kids that didn’t get in went on to the wait list, and would get a seat if anyone pulled out before the first week of school. His kindergarten class began with 20 kids working on the first grade advanced curriculum. Two pulled out before Christmas. He a senior now, has 15 AP courses and 7 advanced courses on his transcript. College is paid for by scholarships and he plans to be a dentist. The competition schools need is not between the schools, but with the challenge of the curriculum. Currently schools pass along kids who fail to meet the standards and tolerate negative behavior. So the charter traditional school comparison is an apples and oranges comparison

My daughter's teacher in public school specifically told us to enroll our kid in charter school instead of staying. Teacher's kids are in charter school. She said it is WAY better.

Why are public schools allowed to not meet their own standards?
Why would public schools not be expected to emulate what the charter schools do, once it is established that they spend half the money and have drastically better results?

Less students, less money to the public schools. LAUSD lost 50, 000 students for 2022-2023 year. Gee I wonder why.

Abolishing the department of education will essentially turn all public schools into charter schools.

The existence of charter schools is profoundly important, but these schools often operate in a less than ideal way. For example, even getting your child an IEP meeting with some of these schools is difficult, then after the fact, their legally mandated compliance is less than likely. Basically, you're more likely to encounter a less than professional atmosphere.

Why do you think charter schools exist?

From what I understand, Charter Schools were actually created to explore higher school autonomy.

Anything that challenges the system is "controversial".

Parents wouldn't choose charter schools if the public schools were providing what their child needs.

by your definition, "parochial schools" are charter schools, except the possibility that the parents' contractual 'tithing' supplants federa tax money.

Maybe the education system in places like Detroit could use some competition.

Charter schools aside, all public schools are NOT created equal. School choice means that public schools must also raise their game and compete against each other. Failing schools will either get better, or go away.

Charter schools are controversial because regular schools and teachers unions want all the money! Avg teacher union employee salary is $180, 000. "Taking money from"? If they're not teaching the kid they haven't lost any money, unless there's a steep profit margin off taxpayer money, and their probably is. It goes to the teachers union!
