I don’t think I have ever just simply thrown away as trash, potting soil. I reuse it in some way.
I may repot something and whatever I take out, I use in the garden, or I mix it back into other soil.
Quite often, I make my own potting soil out of locally available materials like native soil, sand, leaf mold etc.
But purely store-bought, and bagged potting mixes, I don’t think I’ve ever just thrown them away.
I really do love yard debunkafication, Robert.
You’re an unheralded gardening hero

I remember when HGTV actually had Garden Shows and the "celebrities" always said to throw out the potting mix at the end of the season. I didn't believe them then and now I have confirmation. Thanks.

I reuse my potting soil in out door pots, I sometimes dont even add fresh soil just organic fertilizer and my plants do great. Some of my indoor plants are 10 to 20 years and only replace the soil when I have to repot. I had a parlor palm the was 25 yrs old, it got so large it was a tree, I couldnt repot it. I swear there were more roots than soil and it still kept going. I only water my house plants no fertilizer, but I do wipe the leaves.

My bay tree has been in the same 24" pot & same potting media since 1992.
Once a year, it gets a handful of blood, fish & bonemeal thrown on the surface.
It seems perfectly healthy.

I reuse my potting soil. I mix two parts old soil with one part manure or compost. This year I am adding 1/2 part garden soil to add some minerals from the sand and clay in the soil. I learned that from you.

Agreed. As part of my fall clean-up I store my pots and they are best stored empty (space and freeze/thaw cracking-) so I clean out the pots over my lawn and spread the soil with a rake. Sure it’s expensive lawn topper but I have a small city lot and the lawn is beautiful! It’s a win /win in my books.

Magnolia stellata trees are fabulous in the garden.

Outdoor gardening I do fine, indoor not so much. If only I could keep orchids alive for two years, I would gladly repot them. Love your videos!

I reuse my potting soil by adding to my compost bin to make it stretch out

I'm a yr late in seeing this video but boy, I sure needed to hear what u said about reusing the soil. I was starting to plan how I was going yo get rid of the soild i used for 2 yrs now because I had a bad growing season last yr and I thought it was the nutrients that had been used up the yr tho I tried to fertilize and add other things so the plants would do better.
They didn't so I thought I had to start over.
Thank you so much for taking the time to teach us all. 👍🏻

I bought 10 bags of black cow cow manure last year and I bought same place year before. No problem year before but I suspect with the rona I bought sun baked product. It was black dust. Water would not drain in anything I put it in. Last year sucked since in didn't have the funds to fix that error.

Where I live our tap water is so incredibly hard that some days it's the same pH as seawater, so I'm using rain water for everything now. The price is right😂

Hi there. About the white on top of the containers I get that on the outsides of my grow bags as well. I think it’s from the water evaporation leaving behind the salts and calcium in the water.

You cannot reuse the same potting soil if you used it for anything in the nightshade family unless you cook it at 160F or hotter for hours to kill off pathogens, insects, and their eggs.
You would then need to rehydrate the soil and amend it with biomass over a long period of time.
Hard tap water is not a problem if you live in an area with acid rain.
For indoor plants if you have hard water, use distilled water to help prevent mineral buildup.

How often should you repot plants for example frangipai trees ? I’m worried about them getting root bound. I’ve read every 3 years to repot into bigger pots. They are in 110litre pots
