Maytag Washing Machine shaking and walking (updated)

This machine was bought brand new just 2 years ago and for a few months has been shaking violently (see the 16 second mark) and moving around a lot during the spin cycle with any size load. You have to pause it if you can catch it in time to try to evenly distribute the clothes. Had a repair man in yesterday who said it is the gear box that needs replacing and to call the store. The store said the 10 year limited warranty only covers the basket and drive motor, said to call Maytag which I will. The part will likely cost at least $300 and then labor to replace it will be $300 - $400. Seriously. I'm probably looking at a new washer then and definitely not a Maytag.
Update - 6/2021 - Dealing with this had to be put off for sometime due to home health issues and the plan was to just replace it. I decided recently however to take the suggestion of some of the folks that commented and look into the suspension rods. I found a site that described the parts that might fix it and the procedure for doing it. I decided to take a chance on the parts for $60+ first before spending $600-800 for a new machine. I received and email from the parts company in the link that went to my junk folder that suggested the plastic mounts only as being the most common problem. They were only about $10 but I had already ordered the kit so decided to just replace everything. Honestly everything that came out looked no worse than the new stuff that went in but for whatever reason the machine just ran a load trouble free that I would normally have to stop several times at least to rebalance. How long it lasts is anyone's guess though.

Have you tried recalibrating it? Spin dial a couple times and stop and the "Normal" cycle (straight up). Now, one click Left, Right, Right, Right, Left, Right. Lights should be flashing. Move dial to "Rinse" or "Clean" setting (straight down). Press Start. It'll cycle for a couple minutes. After the lights go out, start a normal cycle for test with no load. Hope this may help.

What model is it? Because we're filing a complaint with the BBB for the same reason.

I have a Maytag. It only needs a control circuit board. Everything else is like new. To replace the board, it would cost $700. Anyone interested in my Maytag, please get back your me, make me an offer, and you can pick it up from my garage. I don’t want to throw it in the scrap, there are a lot of expensive on it. My machine is like new, you’ll see when you come and see it.

This is what happens when your toploader doesnt have a agitator

Just change suspension rods. They are not expensive.. and easy to change out.

This is all nice about the solution and stuff, but we did not pay what we paid, for these pos only to fix it ourselves when they are still practically new. What a needless headache.

For you that have changed out your suspension rods and it's still doing the same thing, it's probably got a bad hub support on the shaft that needs changed out, and if the washer tub center hole is stripped out they make a metal repair kit for that also

I had the same machine.. Same problem. Got rid of it and purchased a regular washer with a agitator. Cost more to have it repaired. Warranty crap! Machine not even 5 years old.

Suspension rods may have liquid detergent in them my family accidentally drop some liquid detergent by one of the suspension rods and that's what happens it shakes because it loses the frection from the special grease when it mixes with the liquid detergent. 👍 Clean it put some special for frection grease. It acts as a hydraulic by stoping the spring.

I have the same worthless Maytag washer. It started doing this exact thing last night. It also doesn’t wash things properly. Oh, and the laundry detergent tray has been malfunctioning since day one. It’s always full of water and the “fill to here” tab has fallen. I wish I never bought this POS.

I have the same machine and it is acting up this way right now!!!! The worst machine we’ve ever got. Maytag ruined their reputation with this model, so many issues. We might end up getting new machine.

OK I figured out what was wrong with mine. It’s the springs with the long rod and there’s four of them that goes around the spinning tub open your lid push down in the middle and if it springs up and moves around and bounces pretty easy then it is those Watt is wore out on. Most of those are the white plastic that is assembled to the black piece. You can’t miss it piece take one rod off at a time and replace it now if you want to do a quick fix you take that white piece off of the black piece he is it’s a little booger now slide that up, you can sticker bobby pin I got me some copper wire, the super thin one, and I was able to slide a few of them up and then twisted around the rod and make sure you push it up and be in the top piece that you stuck through the white piece slide it back down pop it back on the black and then what I done was I got a hot glue gun and I glued it from the inside and out of the white tees then of course put it back on the black piece fly the white piece down just a call ranch from to the black piece that snaps in you’ll see it when you get it out do each one take one off put it back on go to the next one etc. etc. it’s a quick fix but I would definitely recommend to replace them. I’ve had my Maytag less than a year so you know they’re going to go out cost me 130 bucks I’ll be able to pick it up next Tuesday and I’m gonna go ahead and get a Nother belt now I turned it on it’s working like a dream 125 bucks not too bad now remember make you bailing wire or whatever you want to use and stick it down through the hole, where the rod will come back up on top, and it snaps back into the plastic piece, the bailing wire will help you pull that rod up through there to each corner as you get to the last one it can get to be a little bit harder that’s why I had to come up with a bailing wire and I made a little loop at the end I hope this helps you guys I’ve been out here for probably 45 hours on each Raj you got a put the lid back down, lean it back, etc. etc. and repeat for each side. Talk to you later.
