Beyond Counsellor as Ally: Understanding the Needs of LGBTQ+ Youth and Taking Action With Clients
Bianca Augustine & Jordan Pearce
Description:
Forty-two percent of LGBTQ+ youth report their communities are not accepting. Research shows that these youth experience harassment at school from adults and fellow students and are at a greater risk for suicide, anxiety, traumatic stress, depression, and educational interruption. As counselors, it is our ethical responsibility to advocate for LGBTQ+ youth wherever we treat them. The special concerns of this population will be discussed and strategies for working with LGBTQ+ youth will be offered. An experiential activity will be
conducted to enhance participants’ learning experience and encourage discussion.
