Yes, Sarah Winchester had inherited the large Winchester Rifle monies from her husband and father-in-law but she had also lost her husband and their only child had died in infancy so she had no family left and was quite bereft . Moreover she believed that all those people whose lives had ended via Winchester armaments being used would come back to haunt her so she had that house built so in the belief that if the place was too big, the ghosts would never find her! Yes, so for the remaining forty years of her life, she had workers building it 24/7 complete with hallways and staircases that went nowhere, etc.
