They chose to go to the moon because it is hard, and Scott Millican is one of the engineers who helped them get there. He trained Apollo astronauts for their flight to the Moon and was present in Mission Control, guiding the astronauts through their moonwalks as well as the entire mission.

Recorded at the inaugural TEDxESA on 11 November 2015, this is a conversation between Dutch ESA astronaut André Kuipers, who visited the International Space Station in 2004 and 2012, and Scott Millican. They compare notes from their vast experience of the ins and outs of space travel, spanning decades from the beginnings of human spaceflight to the state of things today.

Be inspired by their stories of the nuts and bolts of human spaceflight that help realise our dreams and visions for humanities future in space.

The theme of the first official TEDxESA 2015 event was Science Beyond Fiction.

Fantastic! Being born in 1953 I've grown up with the space programs, it was truly a marvel then as it is today! Sincerely, Ossie

Hey ESA, im currently doing my GCSEs and I was debating whether mechanical engineering or astronauts would be a better option to what i originally thought - astrophysics - would be lead a better path to one day go into space
