Beans and rice are really budget friendly. You can to a store where you can buy dried beans in bulk, and so long as you can manage to soak them in advance, you get a complete protein alongside your rice. Canned beans are easier and still cheap, but dried beans are cheaper. A lot of people also think you have to be homeless or of a certain economic status to use food banks, but if many food banks simply give you food with no questions asked. Some organizations near you may also have community fridges that are regularly restocked by good sumaritans and through donations to those organizations. If you have dietary restrictions, a community fridge may be more helpful to you than the cheapest meals possible or food bank donations, as those are often far more limited in terms of what you can get as compared to community fridges.

Edited for grammar and also to add:

Potatoes are also a good thing to add to a cheap diet because they have a lot of the nutrients you need to survive. Assuming no allergies preventing it, you can survive quite cheaply on Potatoes + beans and rice, especially if you add some vegetables and meat for some meals. This isn't advice for a healthy diet, but it is a way to survive cheaply while minimizing impacts to your health.

Next time you go back to the store get more cans of tuna fish. With whatever type of sauce you like to use grab some apples and whatever type of fruit you like or vegetable. Don't go down the middle isles stay on the outer isles only. You can break it apart between $5 for each item that you need and you're probably getting a better deal and have your food last a lot longer.

If you have a traders joe near you I would try shopping there. I always get way more groceries there for less instead of larger grocery stores.

I love how people are giving advice on what foods to buy instead, lmfao. The point is that this shouldn't be the case

Yeah stores be in full scam mode on coupons these days. Most have limited their coupons to either online or digital coupons, where there’s a little challenge to try and redeem it. Looking at you Kroger and digital coupons you have to scan with your phone at the price tags that have them.
I long for the days of the ‘90s prices for everything. 😒

I am having some bruna bönor from a batch I made recently, mixed in with 1/3 cup rice from a medium container which I just cooked. This frees up that container for another tomato to go with whatever sandwiches I make with the $2.29 loaf of sliced white bread I just bought. I made up 3 egg salad after finishing the tuna fish (>$5 for four cans); the egg salad fits in the same container as one can’s worth of tunafish. The other item on the menu is chicken soup with asparagus and rice, for which I am down to the last three quarts. I just made a dozen biscuits, after getting four quarters of butter, of which I use one for the biscuits, to go with the soup. Oatmeal+bulgar wheat cereal is my filler. Still not getting sales of my books to speak of, and all of the job postings are fake, plus I can only go to jobs within walking distance due to my penury.

I'm a cashier, it's insane. A bag of grapes like that is usually $5 or $6. We're all struggling 😔

How about one whole chicken, a bag of rice, some fresh veges and fruit? You could eat better by making your meals from scratch and skipping all those convenience foods.
I get the message. I really do. My monthly grocery budget is now $50 (PER MONTH!), but those convenience foods you're buying have been a luxury expense in my books for years. Shred your own cheese and l3arn how to cook and $20 will go much further.

Change your water brand, and the packaging, that is about the most expensive way of buying it… I buy it in the UK - under $3 for 8 litres, that about 17 US pints…
