German lawmakers on Wednesday passed a resolution declaring the starvation of millions of Ukrainians under Soviet leader Josef Stalin a genocide.

The resolution said Holodomor, as it is known in Ukraine, constitutes a "crime against humanity."

The three parties in Chancellor Olaf Scholz's governing coalition, the Social Democrats, Greens and the Free Democrats as well as the main opposition Christian Democrats (CDU) and allied conservative Christian Social Union (CSU) all voted in favor of the resolution in the Bundestag.

In 2006, the Ukrainian parliament classified Holodomor as a genocide against the country's people.

In November 1932, Soviet leader Stalin dispatched police to seize all grain and livestock from newly collectivized Ukrainian farms, including the seed needed to plant the next crop, and millions died.

Danke. The truth must be recognized, the history must be taught so it does not get repeated.

I'm always amazed at how few people know about the Holodomor.

Russia to this day celebrates Stalin every year. This basically tells everything about fascist Russia.

Thank you Germany for keeping moral standards and signaling to the world all the war crimes atrocities committed by Putin's malevolent dictatorship.

For those of you here mentioning holocaust, you should be aware that Germany fully understands how bad it did during WWII and is deeply sorry about it. It breaks my hearth listening Germany's talks in UN, but I feel than Germany improved, and that they self reflected and they will never do it ever again. Wonderful people.

If there ever was a name that matched a terrible thing it is the Holodomor. It sounds like echoes of horror.

Germany has recognized their responsibility in Holocaust. Russia to this day does not recognize Holodomors in Ukraine or Kazakhstan, and millions of people killed in Gulags

Germany has truly come around in regards to Russia

It's shameful Germany only did this due to outcry caused by the Russian war against Ukraine. Of all countries Germany should have recognized this many decades ago.

Stalin had a terrible track record all across Eastern Europe. It is sad Western Europe didn't do more to stop him. Hopefully this time around all of Europe can really get together and stop Putin. I think we all know where this leads if Putin is not stopped. I think the hearts of Western Europeans are in a much better place than in the 1930's and can make all of Europe a much better place if they collectively put their minds to it.

Tragic that atrocity isn’t recognized because (nation/persons/—) are getting something for their denial. All over the planet 😰

Holodomor was tucked away. Thanks to Vladimir Putin's Stalinist style wielding of power we can now relate better to what Holodomor brought about in Ukraine. A horrific piece of historical brutality can be commemorated. It also strengthens the resolve to resist Putin's similar evilness and support Ukraine on every level and aspect.
