Is THIS the new 2JZ? A deep dive into BMW's S58: After 2 years of beating up our 1000bhp S58 engines, we took them to the experts of BMW M drivetrain development to disassemble and take a thorough look inside. Then we did a detailed analysis, and compared our findings of the S58 with the 2JZ – an engine, that's legendary in the world of tuning and motorsports.

We spoke to Kevin last year at Goodwood FOS but it's great to see even more info on the build process and also how the components are standing up to all the abuse. What an amazing opportunity to teardown the engine with BMW M themselves.

We took a little different approach for our road going 1000hp+ builds but also keeping many of the standard parts because BMW did such a good job designing the S58.

S58 is king 👑 but respect to the 2J for holding the crown since 94’

Thank you for this video, this is very useful to see the engineering put into the S58 and it shows how highly capable this engine is.

From a s14 2JZ owner, of course the S58 is a better motor. We're looking at almost 35 years between the two. IMHO, the S58 BETTER be BETTER with that much time and technology. But the 2JZ is NO doubt WAY ahead of its time, and for BMW to FINALLY come up with 2 inline-6 turbo motors (S5x & B58) to dethrone a legend, says something about the 2JZ

I agree with 98% of the chart minus the section on parts availability. There are hundreds of manufacturers of aftermarket parts support for the 2jz that are readily available. Even talking OEM parts, your local Lexus / Toyota dealer has a majority of parts available for a 2jz with the cross platforms like IS300 / LC300 etc. You can even buy a complete 2jz gte rotating assembly shortblock right at a dealer.

The S58 / B58 platform are still ramping up on aftermarket support and it's great to see but I still think the 2JZ section should have been 4-5 stars on parts availability

Love this engine family, I have the older brother of the motor, the N54, BMW turbo 6 cylinder motors are beautiful

WONDERFUL wonderful video, great editing, great narrating as well. 10/10...

The cameraman ability to focus on the parts in view and stand hold the camera without the frame wandering around needs much work unfortunately but again: thank you for a brilliant video 🔥🙏🏾

They should make port fuel injection kit for the s58. Oem or after market. I don't want to clean the intake valves. Asap. For the x3m competition from 2020.

What a fantastic educational and insightful video.

Doubly impressive that it's so well done in English.

I'd love to know how much power you think you could get out of a B58 😂

👏👏👏

This is great to have found! Something not really mentioned was the 2J wasn't really discovered and popularized until a good amount of them were already in junkyards and tons of them for cheap which is what propelled that status. Not sure that we would ever see that though with the S58, the base cars are just worth too much and BMW parts cost twice as much as Toyotas so no, no matter how good that 58 is, that will be the limiting factor. I don't really think any BMW engine has ever had anywhere near that kind of status because of the costs involved.
Who knows really what will happen and I am a layman, so what do I know.
Just learning as much as I can about it. Not sure if there is a current motor in the toyota range that might be close to that base. Needs to have super high production. Not sure if a V6 will ever compare.

You should concider to zoom a bit more in and out and shake the camera around a little more. I don´t get motion sick enough from it as is.

Do you guys run the car to a higher redline than the stock 7200? With your sequential transmission it should be able to go higher since it's the ZF that brought the redline down from the S55. Also is more broad aftermarket MoTec support coming for the S58?
