The Black Suit is for when Spider-Man needs to do something he doesn't want associated with the Red and Blue. Red and Blue is "Friendly-Neighborhood." Black is "Angry Back-Alley."

In the 1987, there was a story where Kingpin, against Spider-Man's best efforts, regained control of the criminal underworld. Spidey, in his black suit, angrily told him someday he would push him too far and it would just come down to him and the Kingpin, and he worried if he'd be able to hold himself in check on that day. In 2007 Spidey made good on his promise in Back in Black.

The way he absolutely and effortlessly thrashes Fisk is one of my favorite moments of Spider-Man.
Because we the reader are supposed to be as shocked as Fisk is. This is so out of character for Pete. What we basically get from Pete in that scene is a powerful statement:

“I am a nice guy. I am a good person. It is because I ultimately care about everyone’s well being that I pull my punches. Even you, my enemies, I care about in some way. But right now I am not nice. I am not good. You crossed a line. And now you’ll see what I am when I no longer care about you.”
