With a 6502, a breadboard is the only socket you need.

> Intel: releases same CPU on a new socket
> AMD: releases new CPU on the same socket

Always heard the argument from Intel users that the new sockets are "necessary" for newer CPU's for many reasons. That there is no way possible to have newer architectures fitting older sockets.
Then AMD pulls this promise to keep the AM4 socket alive for a lot longer than any Intel architecture ever could, proving everyone wrong. That is is indeed possible to have multiple generations of CPU's on the same socket.
AMD more or less showed us what a cash-grabber Intels frequent socket-change really was. Intel was taken with their pants down. I hope they'll improve from this point on.

Lot of higher end mobos now can update the bios from a USB port without a CPU installed.

Intel def changes the socket for a cashgrab, they charge people for the ability to overclock on both the motherboard and CPU and lock out features intentionally so they could charge you more.
AMD isn't playing their games
I do wish however, that AMD does build in a Mini-CPU just powerful enough to flash the motherboard with a new BIOS, that would save them having to send out CPU's just to update to a new bios

There are some odd motherboards in industrial uses, that support multiple intel CPU generations on the same socket. So its purely artificial limitation by Intel.

5:30 Note, this isn't entirely correct. Some motherboards have a usb slot where you can install a functional bios for the new cpu.

This does mean that you have to have a computer capable of downloading the bios onto a stick but you can avoid the rest of that hassle. At least on a decent number of boards I know this applies from experience.

A kid came to me to get his motherboard pins repaired because he tried to put an i7-X into his i5 machine and mangled the pins because Intel are jerks and he didn't know that the X chips have a different socket.

I really wish you would have covered socket 775 sticker mods. They force newer CPUs to work on older motherboards essentially by swapping two contacts around, and it seemingly works! How could this possibly be justified

Intel: MONEEEYYY AND LIES
AMD: Money but a bit more consumer friendly

When you have to update a BIOS with an old CPU to support a newer CPU, I don't put thermal paste, I just leave the dissipator on the CPU, direct metal to metal contact and without locking with screws. Total time for a BIOS update is less than 5 minutes if you know what you're doing, the CPU won't go overtemp.

>cpu dies
>need new mobo
>new mobo doesnt support ddr3
>new mobo doesnt have floppy port
>have to get new ram
>have to get new storage
why

I'm so glad AMD are killing it with the Ryzen series, Intel got greedy and lazy selling the same stale shit with minimal upgrades over the years, they deserve the drastic drop in share prices

Personally speaking i've moved past the point where having to use an old CPU would intimidate me as long as they gave me a loaner.

I wish when I first built I knew better and went AMD. I'll probably build again soon, to go full AMD.

Your thumbnails are consistently excellent.

You could use a eeprom programmer to flash the updated bios to the chip, thus not needing a cpu at all.

While I've always had a preference for Intel CPUs, the thought of having buy a new motherboard to upgrade to a slightly superior version of the current product does induce an irrational amount of rage in me. Kind of stupid to say, but sometimes I wish that CPUs work like any other component that goes into a PCI-e slot.
